Job Description RESPONSIBILITIES: - Retinal Detachment Repair: Surgical Retina Ophthalmologists perform surgeries to reattach a detached retina, a serious condition that can lead to vision loss if not promptly treated - Macular Hole and Pucker Repair: They perform procedures to repair macular holes and epiretinal membranes (wrinkles on the retina) that can distort vision - Vitreoretinal Surgery: These specialists perform vitrectomy surgery, a procedure to remove the vitreous gel inside the eye, often used to treat conditions like diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal tears - Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment: Surgical Retina Ophthalmologists may use laser surgery or other techniques to manage complications of diabetic retinopathy, such as bleeding or abnormal blood vessels in the retina - Retinopathy of Prematurity Treatment: They treat retinal abnormalities in premature infants that can lead to vision impairment or blindness - Intraocular Foreign Body Removal: They may perform surgeries to remove foreign objects that have entered the eye and are affecting the retina - Complex Retinal Surgeries: These specialists address complex cases involving trauma, tumors, and other conditions that affect the retina - Intravitreal Injections: Surgical Retina Ophthalmologists administer intravitreal injections of medications, such as anti-VEGF agents, to manage conditions like age-related macular degeneration and retinal vein occlusions - Research and Innovation: They may engage in research to advance surgical techniques and treatment options in the field of surgical retina
