**J0B DESCRIPTION.**

Welding technicians are responsible for the fabrication and repair of metal products. They use specialized equipment to join metals together in a way that creates a permanent bond. This process is commonly referred to as welding.

Welding technicians may work on a variety of projects, from building ships or airplanes to creating custom auto parts or building structures. Whatever their area of focus may be, they must have an extensive understanding of the materials they’re working with and how best to combine them into a single cohesive unit.

**Roles and responsibilities**
- Operating welding equipment to join metal components together such as piping or structural supports
- Inspecting welds for defects such as porosity or cracks and performing rework when necessary
- Cleaning, repairing, and maintaining equipment used in welding processes
- Performing non-destructive testing of materials using equipment such as magnetic particle inspection machines, ultrasonic equipment, or gas detectors
- Maintaining safety standards and practices in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Inspecting materials for defects before welding begins to ensure that welds will be strong enough for their intended use
- Reading blueprints and other drawings to identify weld points and ensure proper welds are made
- Communicating with supervisors to discuss welding plans and procedures
- Reading and interpreting engineering diagrams, schematics, and technical drawings

- **Welding skills**: Welding skills are the abilities and knowledge that a welder has to operate a welding machine and perform a quality weld. Welding skills are the most important skills a welding technician can have. Welding skills can be learned through on-the-job training, technical school or a combination of both.
- **Communication skills**:Communication skills are necessary for welding technicians to have because they often work in teams and must be able to understand and follow instructions from their supervisors. Welding technicians also communicate with clients and customers when they are working on a project.
- **Problem-solving skills**: Welding technicians solve problems on a daily basis. They use their problem-solving skills to find solutions to issues with equipment, find ways to improve their welding techniques and troubleshoot welding issues.
- **Attention to detail**:Welding requires precision and attention to detail. Welding technicians need to be able to notice small imperfections in their work and make adjustments to ensure the welds are of high quality. Attention to detail can also help you learn new skills and techniques more quickly.
- **Mechanical aptitude**:A basic understanding of mechanical systems and how they work can be beneficial for welding technicians. This can help them troubleshoot problems with equipment and machinery and identify potential issues before they arise.
