A restaurant steward typically works in the back-of-house operations, focusing on ensuring cleanliness and proper functioning in the kitchen and dining areas. The role may vary slightly depending on the restaurant, but it generally includes the following responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities:
Cleaning and Maintenance:
Clean dishes, utensils, glassware, and cooking equipment.
Maintain cleanliness of kitchen floors, counters, and other prep areas.
Ensure trash is disposed of promptly and the trash areas are kept clean.
Maintain cleanliness of storage areas for food and supplies.
Assisting Kitchen Staff:
Help with the unloading and organization of deliveries.
Stock kitchen supplies and ingredients, making sure the kitchen has the necessary items for cooking.
Assist with basic prep work when needed, such as chopping vegetables or preparing simple ingredients.
Dishwashing:
The primary duty is washing dishes, glassware, and utensils used during food preparation and serving.
Organizing Storage:
Ensure that the kitchen’s storage areas are tidy, including managing the proper organization of clean dishes, utensils, and cookware.
Ensuring Sanitation and Safety:
Adhere to hygiene, health, and safety regulations, ensuring all equipment and surfaces are sanitized according to standards.
Report any maintenance issues to the kitchen manager or supervisor.
Supporting Service:
Assist in setting up or clearing dining areas before or after service.
In some cases, restaurant stewards may also assist servers by delivering clean glassware or cutlery to the dining room.
Skills and Qualities:
Attention to detail: A key part of the job is ensuring cleanliness and organization in all areas of the kitchen.
Physical stamina: The job can be physically demanding, requiring long hours of standing, lifting, and moving heavy objects.
Teamwork: Often works closely with chefs, kitchen staff, and other restaurant employees to ensure smooth operations.
Time management: Stewards must be able to efficiently manage tasks during busy periods.
Pay: ₹17,000.00 - ₹20,000.00 per month
