Endoscopy Technician

The Endoscopy Technician will assist in performing endoscopic procedures for elderly patients in a geriatric healthcare setting. This role involves the preparation, operation, and maintenance of endoscopic equipment, as well as providing direct patient care to ensure safety and comfort before, during, and after endoscopic procedures.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Endoscopic Procedures Support: Assist the physician and nursing staff during endoscopic procedures such as colonoscopies, upper GI endoscopies, bronchoscopies, and others, ensuring the proper setup of equipment and patient positioning.
- Equipment Preparation and Maintenance: Prepare endoscopic instruments and equipment, ensuring they are properly cleaned, sterilized, and functioning according to hospital protocols. Perform routine inspections and maintenance on endoscopy equipment, reporting any malfunctions or repairs needed.
- Patient Care: Prepare patients for endoscopic procedures by explaining the process, answering questions, and ensuring comfort. Assist with patient positioning and monitor vital signs under the supervision of clinical staff.
- Patient Safety: Monitor patient safety throughout the procedure, identifying potential risks or complications related to elderly patients, such as mobility issues or age-related conditions. Ensure proper infection control practices are followed to prevent cross-contamination.
- Documentation: Record relevant patient information, procedural details, and equipment use in patient charts accurately and in accordance with hospital policy. Maintain accurate records for future reference and legal compliance.
- Collaboration: Work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers to ensure efficient workflow and patient care. Participate in pre-procedure briefings and post-procedure reviews with the healthcare team.
- Endoscopic Equipment Sterilization and Handling: Ensure endoscopic instruments are cleaned, sterilized, and stored according to hospital and manufacturer guidelines. Maintain sterile fields during procedures.
- Patient Advocacy and Communication: Communicate effectively with patients, particularly elderly individuals, providing emotional support and reassurance throughout the process. Address patient concerns and assist with post-procedure care instructions.
- Quality Control: Adhere to all hospital and regulatory guidelines related to infection control, patient privacy (HIPAA), and safety standards during all procedures and patient interactions.
- Training and Education: Stay updated on the latest trends, techniques, and advancements in endoscopy technology and practices. Participate in continuing education and training sessions as required.
**Qualifications**:
Completion of an accredited Endoscopy Technician program or a related healthcare training program.
Certifications:
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), required.
- Certification as a Registered Endoscopy Technician (RET) or equivalent, preferred.
- Other certifications as required by state or hospital policies.
**Experience**:
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience working as an Endoscopy Technician, preferably in a geriatric or acute care setting.
- Experience with endoscopic equipment, sterilization techniques, and patient care procedures.
**Skills**:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and sometimes high-stress environment.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Empathy and sensitivity when working with elderly patients, particularly those with dementia or other cognitive impairments.
- Knowledge of infection control protocols and patient safety standards.
