The Registered Nurse First Assistant is a licensed professional who renders direct patient care as a part of the perioperative role by functioning as a first assistant to the surgeon. The RNFA practices an expanded role of perioperative nursing and has acquired knowledge, skills and judgment necessary to assist the surgeon through organized instruction and supervised practice. The RNFA practices under the supervision of the surgeon in the Operating Room and Labor and Delivery Suite as a First Assistant. The RNFA will also function as a Perioperative Registered Nurse when required by departmental staffing needs and will provide patient care in accordance with the standards, policies, and practices of Enloe Medical Center. The Registered Nurse prioritizes patient needs, coordinates patient care, and collaborates with other members of the patient care team to provide care in accordance with the medical plan of care.
EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:
Two years current/recent perioperative experience
Desired:
Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in a Nursing/Health/Biological field
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS:
Minimum:
Current licensure with the California Board of Registered Nursing
Current CPR
Current ACLS recognition
Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR)
PALS within 1 year of employment
Credentialed through the Enloe Medical Staff office
SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:
Must demonstrate technical competence, professional clinical judgment, communication skills and sensitivity for the patient and family in crisis. Must be able to interact professionally and effectively communicate with physicians, staff, patients and the public. Must have the ability to organize and prioritize work efficiently. Must have the ability to work in a demanding environment while remaining calm, efficient and focused. Must have the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must have the ability and willingness to actively participate in continuing education programs and unit based QI task forces. Must have the ability to perform as a preceptor in the training of students, and the ability to act as a department resource and a positive role model. Must be able to perform proficiently at intermediate and advanced levels and must meet competency requirements.
