**Job Purpose**:
- To provide the technical expertise necessary to design, develop and implement Tooling systems in complex manufacturing operations & sophisticated machines.
- To determine the manufacturing processes, tooling and fixture design, and equipment needed to successfully and economically produce assigned parts in accordance with engineering specifications.
- To guide broader and complex tooling assignments (Tool Design, Tool selection, Tool validation) that meets business unit specific requirement and provides ongoing high-quality high value support to the enterprise.
**Job Duties**:
Job duties includes but not limited to the following:
- This position is expected to function as a specialist with respect to a specific technical phase of the planning function and generally falls within the areas of planning, tooling & other manufacturing operations, wherever a specific technical assignment may be needed and co-ordinate with the technical staff for tooling to guide them in the project & function. Work assignments may be specialized in nature but may also be broad based with coordination between other staff personnel to complete a larger project.
- Be a technical resource hub on tooling for the enterprise. Mentor, share & develop team engineers on the tooling work. Should be able to effectively communicate the project status, updates, results to the stakeholders worldwide, management & Client.
- Should be able to conceptualize, develop, design tooling as per client requirement & specifications. Should execute feasibility study of the proposed tool design and work with process planning, manufacturing, engineering to arrive at the final functional specification of the tool design. Validate the tool design created in terms of structural aspects using hand calculations and creo simulation or pro mechanica / other FEA packages.
- Should have excellent knowledge & experience in the design of Jigs, gauges, templates & work holding fixtures
- Assembly build fixtures, shipping fixtures, lifting fixtures, machining fixtures, fixtures for paint shops, fit-up fixtures incorporating pneumatic & hydraulic clamps.
- Should have excellent knowledge in the calculation of the machining cutting force, selection of the cylinders/ clamps, knowledge about various suppliers of cylinders, pumps & other components required for the design, structural requirement for testing fixtures are required.
- Keeps abreast of industry changes by attending product demonstrations and identifies ongoing improvements in processes and technologies to better serve customers.
- Assists in developing department capital and expense budgets. Maintains the department capital forecast. Coordinates capital projects for process enhancement and to improve customer satisfaction, conducting research and ensuring proper approvals.
**Interpersonal Skills**:
- Ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the Caterpillar tooling and fixture community.
- Ability to function as an individual contributor or project team leader.
- Ability to network and establish collaborative relationships within Caterpillar.
- Good communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills
**Background / Experience**:
- This position requires thorough knowledge of manufacturing concepts, heat treat operations, etc.,
- Technical or university degree combined with a minimum of 15 year of appropriate manufacturing experience or a minimum of 3 years as a Manufacturing Engineer 3, or appropriate equivalent external experience.
- Must possess appropriate language and communication skills.
- Strong Customer focus and ability to influence.
- Ability to quickly understand technology changes and drive advancement within the organization
- Understanding of both technology and business domains
- Knowledge of business operations including the technical infrastructure and general business processes.
- Hands on experience in design and implementation of hydraulic / pneumatic controls needed for the fixtures
