Anaesthesia Technician

Job Summary:
The Anesthesia Technician plays a critical role in supporting anaesthesia providers (anesthetists or anesthesiologists) in the administration of anaesthesia during surgical and medical procedures. The technician ensures the safe preparation, maintenance, and operation of anaesthesia equipment, as well as assisting with the monitoring of patients during procedures. The role also includes preparing anaesthesia supplies, troubleshooting equipment, and maintaining inventory.

Key Responsibilities**:1. Equipment Preparation and Maintenance**
- Prepare, assemble, test, and maintain anesthesia equipment, including machines, vaporizers, monitors, and other related devices.
- Ensure that all anesthesia equipment is functioning properly and report any faults or malfunctions to the appropriate personnel.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and calibration of anesthesia machines and related equipment.
- Ensure that anesthesia machines are stocked with necessary medications and gases, and are ready for use prior to each surgical procedure.

**2. Patient Care Support**
- Assist anaesthesia providers during patient induction, maintenance, and recovery by preparing and managing anaesthesia supplies and medications.
- Support anaesthetists by positioning patients appropriately on the operating table and ensuring that necessary monitoring devices are applied.
- Monitor and adjust anaesthesia equipment throughout the procedure under the direction of the anaesthesia provider.

**3. Safety and Sterility**
- Maintain a sterile field and comply with infection control standards when handling anaesthesia equipment and supplies.
- Follow hospital policies and procedures for safety, including checking for allergies and patient-specific concerns regarding anaesthesia.
- Ensure all equipment and supplies are stored and disposed of according to safety and regulatory standards.

**4. Documentation and Reporting**
- Maintain accurate records of anaesthesia equipment usage, maintenance schedules, and any incidents or malfunctions.
- Prepare and document the setup of anaesthesia stations for specific procedures, ensuring that all required materials and medications are available.
- Assist in tracking anaesthesia medications and supplies to ensure proper usage and inventory management.

**5. Inventory and Supply Management**
- Monitor and manage the inventory of anesthesia supplies and medications, ensuring adequate stock levels.
- Order and restock equipment and supplies as needed, and maintain inventory records.
- Dispose of expired or damaged materials appropriately.

**6. Collaboration and Communication**
- Work closely with anaesthesia providers, surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare team members to ensure the efficient and safe delivery of anaesthesia care.
- Communicate effectively with patients when appropriate, providing information on the anaesthesia process and answering questions.
- Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current with new anaesthesia technologies and techniques.

Required Qualifications:

- **Education**:

- Certification in Anaesthesia Technology (where applicable) or completion of a relevant clinical training program.
- High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education or specialized training in anaesthesia technology preferred.
- **Experience**:

- Previous experience in an anaesthesia or operating room environment preferred.
- Experience with anaesthesia equipment maintenance and troubleshooting is advantageous.
- **Skills & Competencies**:

- Strong technical skills and familiarity with anaesthesia machines, monitors, and supplies.
- Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly in preparing and maintaining equipment and supplies.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with other healthcare team members.
- Knowledge of infection control and safety protocols related to anaesthesia and surgery.
- **Certifications/Licenses**:

- Certification in Anaesthesia Technology (or equivalent) may be required depending on location or healthcare facility.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification may be required.

Working Conditions:

- Work in a hospital or surgical environment with potential exposure to hazardous materials, including medications and anaesthesia gases.
- May require standing for long periods and assisting with patient positioning.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on the needs of the hospital or facility.
