**Speech and Swallowing Therapist**

Conceptualized in the year 2004 as a philanthropic initiative for the Eastern and North-Eastern
parts of India and the neighboring countries, the Tata Medical Center (TMC) started operations in
Kolkata on May 16, 2011. The hospital is governed by a charitable trust - Tata Medical Centre Trust.
It is an integrated Oncology facility with well-trained professional staff and equipped with modern
facilities and the most contemporary medical equipment. The hospital was designed by Cannon
Design, a renowned architectural firm from North America. It is located on 13 acres of land at New
Town in Kolkata, West Bengal.

**Therapist**

**Qualification**:Bachelors or Masters Degree in Speech Pathology or Communicative Disorders

(B.A.S.L.P. / M.A.S.L.P)

**Experience**: 3 years of minimum experience in the relevant specialty.

**Brief Job Description: **

Independently assess speech and swallowing problems in patients referred and recommend
appropriate treatment

Work jointly with the Head and Neck Surgeon in performing procedures like functional
endoscopic assessment of swallowing ( FEES) and videofluoroscopy

Join the head and neck surgery team on rounds to assist inpatients with swallowing
problems following surgery and reconstruction

Work in association with the Dental Surgeon and Physiotherapist wherever comprehensive
rehabilitation is necessary

Develop protocols for various rehabilitative strategies and maintain prospective data for
research and anlaysis later

Pre operative assessment of head and neck patients and appropirate counseling regarding
anticipated issues with speech and swallowing

Post operative care of laryngectomized patients including care of tracheoesophageal
prosthesis

Regular follow up of patients with head and neck cancer patients treated with
chemoradiation with regards to swallowing issues

Management of children with speech, language and hearing disabilities following treatment
of brain tumours or in patients who have received radiotherapy to the brain

Assessment of hearing in patients on toxic chemotherapy eg. Cisplatinum

Maintenance of accounts and appropriate documentation of consumables incurred by the
unit.

Assume responsibility and ensure everyday care and regular maintenance of equipment
and instruments earmarked for the unit.

Work with various subspecialties as and when required

Ensure regular research output and scientific publications from the department.

Participate in and contribute to academic sessions in the institution.

Other job related duties as assigned by the consultant from time to time.

**Essential Attributes: **

Knowledgeable of the principles and practices of communicative disorders including;
dysphagia, and other disciplines

Ability to evaluate, plan and implement therapy including dysphagia rehabilitation program
for individual patients

Ability to explain, demonstrate and teach speech and swallowing rehabilitative measure
Ability to work effectively with others in an inter-disciplinary team relationship
Ability to be self-directing and to seek direction and consultation as needed
Ability to express oneself clearly verbally and in writing.
Demonstrates competence within the scope of practice including age and condition

appropriate considerations.
Demonstrates personal and professional integrity and interest in growth and learning.
Employee must demonstrate basic computer skills.

The remuneration will be commensurate with years of experience.
