**Tata Medical Center Fellowship in Urological Surgery
Conceptualised in the year 2004 as a philanthropic initiative for the Eastern and North-Eastern
parts of India and the neighbouring countries, the Tata Medical Center (TMC) started operations
in Kolkata on May 16, 2011. The hospital is governed by a charitable trust - Tata Medical Centre
Trust. It is an integrated Oncology facility with well-trained professional staff and equipped
with modern facilities and the most contemporary medical equipment. Set up at a cost of Rs.
350 crores, the Hospital, with a capacity of 437 beds, serves all sections of the society, with 50%
of the infrastructure earmarked for free or subsidized treatment for the underprivileged
sections. The hospital provides a wide spectrum of services from diagnosis, therapy to
rehabilitation and palliative support in cancer. The Institution's objective is to excel in service,

This state-of-the-art Hospital has been built on carefully landscaped grounds to emphasize the
holistic approach in our crusade against cancer. Diagnosis and treatment are characterized by a
multi-disciplinary approach with Disease Management Teams, wherein experts from different
streams participate in decision-making for treatment protocols, using evidence-based medical
strategies and appropriate documented clinical guidelines. Tata Medical Center, Kolkata, has
strived to be one of the leading cancer care and research institutions in the country and has
benefited West Bengal as well as the adjoining states and neighboring countries.
Surgery
**The Department**
The Department of Uro Oncology aims to offer evidence based protocolized treatment of all
Urological cancers. The department offers full range of diagnostic and therapeutic options for
all Urological cancers. It runs the largest superficial bladder cancer surveillance programme in
the region. It has the latest simultaneous biplanar US scanner for prostate biopsy and
Urodynamics system. It has excellent support from Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology,
Radiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Intensive care and other surgical
specialities. The hospital has an excellent electronic medical records (EMR) system making data
analysis/retrieval easy.
There is a dedicated Surgical ICU, HDU and Surgical ward. The department is supported by
excellent theatre facilities with the best open, endoscopic and laparoscopic equipment. The
theatres boast of positive pressure laminar air flow, HEPA filter, sophisticated anaesthetic
equipments, state-of-the-art operating lights and tables, PACS, vessel sealing devices, intra
- operative ultrasonography and facilities for frozen section biopsy. **There is an ongoing Robotic**
**surgery programme (da Vinci) since 2017- with Robotics and laparoscopy being done**
**every week.**
**Staffing:
The department has 3 full time Consultants, 3 Dedicated Uro Oncology Fellows, 2 Rotating
Surgical Fellows, one Urology Technician and a Clinical research Coordinator. The Fellows work
in close association with the consultants and supervision and help is always available.
**Objectives
The Fellowship module aims to tutor personnel willing to devote their subsequent
career in urology. Ingrained in the training program, is the mandated philosophy of
multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment. The Fellows would be involved in out
- patient and in-patient care with assessment of new and review patients, and also in the
operation theatres. This would help Fellows develop skills to judge and decide
independently. Active efforts would be made to ensure that Fellows understand the
value of molecular medicine in diagnosis.
**No of Fellowship in Uro Oncology Positions
There are currently four positions.
**Fellowship Duration
1 year extendable upto another year depending on the experience and requirements of
the individual. Further extensions may be available depending on performance and
aptitude.
**Eligibility Criteria
Essential: M.S. or DNB degree in General Surgery
Desirable: MCH/DNB in Urology.
Attitude: Keen to learn and emphasis on delivery of quality medical care
**Clinical responsibilities
The Fellows will be involved in the managing out-patient and in-patient clinical
services, and actively assisting or operating in the theatre. They will have ample
opportunity in all spheres of operative Urology. They will be resident while being on
- call for Urology.
**Academic responsibilities
The Fellows will be involved in audits, case presentation, discussing contemporary
publications, seminars and organizing multidisciplinary meetings. It is mandatory for
the Uro Oncology Fellows to present in national/international meetings.
**Research
The department is already involved in a national research project in the treatment of
advanced prostate cancer. Further projects are in various stage
