Role Summary
WSP is seeking a **Principal **Marine Ecologist** (with marine / Fresh water expertise) to join our large and growing technical support team in India (Noida/Bangalore) to work with our UK wide ecology team.
The successful applicant will be a part of the aquatic ecology team - a technical specialist group within the wider ecology team - that covers marine and freshwater ecology. data handling / map making professionals who will be part of WSP iCRC UK Ecology Team, delivering the highest standards of technical work and aiding the continued success of the ecology business by assisting us in our client focused delivery of projects.
The work will be focussed on providing design, mapping support, including GIS deliverables and interpretation if required of the raw survey information gathered by ecologists in the UK. Deliverables will be used in reports and assessments provided to our clients for a range of different commercial and scientific sectors.
**Responsibilities**:
- Managing a portfolio of diverse and interesting aquatic ecology projects and producing high quality technical reports.
- Supporting our UK wide projects in transitional, coastal, marine and/or freshwater environments in the UK and beyond.
- Preparing supporting information for investigations of European Protected Species
- Supporting the technical and professional development of the team of aquatic ecologists and/or learning and developing new skills with opportunity to influence peers.
- Actively promoting knowledge sharing with an inclusive nature, developing working relations with all aspects of WSP, gaining internal and international clients along the way
- You’ll have a visible role within the business, interacting with other ecology team leads across the UK.
Key Competencies / Skills
Mandatory skills
- Competent ecologist with marine and/or aquatic background having strong UK experience.
- 10-15 years of experience in the relevant field
- Experience in supporting technical assessments for EIA, Habitat Regulation Assessment (HRA) and Water Framework Directives (WFD), planning processes, and ecological assessments.
- Understanding the impacts of developmental activities on the species and on the various habitats like, transitional, coastal, marine and/or freshwater environments handling and managing large data sets for map making
- Are confident and highly motivated, with good communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Desirable Skills
- Experience of Ecological Consultancy or working within the field of conservation
- Proficiency in wildlife legislation, planning processes, and ecological assessments.
- Demonstrated experience in report writing, and quality assurance.
- Knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) principles.
**Qualifications**:
- Have a master’s degree in a Zoology / Biological science with specialisation in marine or aquatic.
