Maintaining the library: Keeping the library tidy, dusting shelves and furniture, and restocking supplies
- Processing materials: Labeling, covering, and registering new materials, and processing returns and payments
- Assisting patrons: Helping patrons use the library, answering questions, and directing them to the right areas
- Helping with special events: Planning and participating in events like used book sales and children's movie nights
- Handling loans: Loaning and collecting materials, and handling loans between libraries
- Registering new cardholders: Issuing library cards and processing address and name changes
- Using the computer: Entering data into the library's computer system, and using the library database to locate materials
- Performing other tasks: Answering phones, operating a photocopier, and typing
- Library assistants help keep the library running smoothly and assist the main librarian
