The Outpatient Phlebotomist is responsible for collection of blood samples with standard venipuncture and microtainer techniques for all age groups. Performs venous and capillary blood specimen collection using established safety practices in a skillful and accurate manner. Performs finger sticks and heel sticks. Properly collects blood cultures without contamination. Receives laboratory specimens and processes samples for Laboratory testing, performs clerical and client services functions in the Laboratory; draw station sites and travel to additional sites when needed. Utilizes the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to order tests, collect specimens, locates test results, specimen processing and handling functions to ensure timeliness and accuracy of workflow and monitor pending logs regularly to provide rapid turnaround time. Follows departmental and regulatory policies for proper patient and specimen identification. Rotates in different Outpatient Draw Stations.
An Outpatient phlebotomist must work well under pressure and be sensitive to the confidentiality of protected health information. The position requires exercise of judgment under general supervision. Build collaborative professional relationships to create quality healthcare. Work independently in a professional team-oriented environment. Possess office skills such as but not limited to data entry of patient information in an accurate and timely manner, answering the phone, transferring calls, faxing, printing, filing, cleaning, and organizing. Ability to multi-task and do other duties as assigned including but not limited to charge entry and charge review. Identifies and conducts problem resolution for preanalytical specimen issues.
EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:
Minimum:
Experience as a licensed phlebotomist or experience in a clinical laboratory
Prior experience utilizing clerical, computer, and receptionist skills
Desired:
Medical terminology
Prior in phlebotomy and laboratory specimen processing
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
Minimum:
Current Phlebotomy Certificate CPT I issued by the California Department of Public Health.
