Position: Horticulture Officer

Job Summary:

A Horticulture Officer is responsible for managing, developing, and improving horticultural programs, including the cultivation of plants, flowers, fruits, and vegetables. The role involves research, plantation planning, pest and disease control, soil management, and sustainable agricultural practices.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Crop & Plantation Management

• Plan, supervise, and execute the cultivation of horticultural crops, including fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants.

• Implement sustainable and high-yield farming techniques.

• Monitor plant health, growth conditions, and productivity.

2. Research & Development

• Conduct research on new plant varieties, organic farming techniques, and climate-resilient crops.

• Collaborate with universities, agricultural research institutions, and government bodies.

• Develop innovative farming practices to enhance crop yield and quality.

3. Pest & Disease Control

• Identify and control plant diseases, pests, and invasive species.

• Recommend organic and chemical treatments as per industry guidelines.

• Train farmers and agricultural workers on best practices for pest and disease management.

4. Soil & Water Management

• Conduct soil tests and recommend appropriate fertilizers and irrigation techniques.

• Implement water conservation techniques such as drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting.

• Develop strategies to improve soil fertility and prevent degradation.

5. Policy Implementation & Advisory

• Ensure compliance with agricultural policies and government regulations.

• Advise farmers, landscapers, and businesses on best horticultural practices.

• Assist in the development of urban greenery projects, including parks and public gardens.

6. Training & Community Engagement

• Organize workshops, training programs, and awareness campaigns for farmers and agricultural workers.

• Promote sustainable agricultural methods and modern horticultural techniques.

• Collaborate with local communities and NGOs on afforestation and environmental conservation projects.

7. Budgeting & Resource Management

• Prepare budget estimates for horticultural projects.

• Manage procurement of seeds, fertilizers, and other agricultural inputs.

• Oversee labor and resource allocation for large-scale horticultural operations.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

Education:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, Botany, Forestry, or a related field.

• Additional certifications in Soil Science, Pest Control, or Sustainable Agriculture are a plus.

Experience:

• 8-10 years of experience in horticulture, agriculture, landscaping, or related fields.

Technical Skills:

• Knowledge of modern farming techniques, greenhouse management, and irrigation systems.

• Understanding of fertilizers, pesticides, and organic farming methods.

• Familiarity with GIS-based soil mapping and precision farming tools.

Soft Skills:

• Strong leadership and team management skills.

• Excellent communication and advisory skills.

• Problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
