Job Description General Manager – Civil Construction South East Queensland | Civil Earthworks, Excavation, Roadworks & Plant Hire Our client is a well-established South East Queensland civil contractor with more than 20 years’ experience delivering high-quality excavation, bulk earthworks, infrastructure solutions, roadworks and plant hire across commercial, residential, and industrial projects. They’re known for a practical, service-led approach—reliability, transparency, and consistently delivering safe, on-time outcomes. Due to continued growth and a strong forward pipeline, they are seeking a commercially astute General Manager to lead the business into its next phase. The Opportunity This is a senior leadership role with full responsibility for business performance. You will drive strategic direction, operational excellence, and sustainable growth while building on the organisation’s reputation in civil construction and plant hire. You’ll work closely with the Directors and lead a capable delivery team across projects including subdivisions, private civil works, and Queensland TMR / Main Roads packages. Key Responsibilities Strategic & Commercial Leadership Develop and execute business strategy aligned to market demand and capability. Lead business development activity, strengthening key client relationships and expanding revenue streams. Maintain and grow networks within TMR, roadworks, and civil infrastructure contacts . Financial Oversight Full P&L ownership, budgeting, forecasting, and margin optimisation. Drive cost control across labour, plant utilisation, subcontractors, and materials. Establish clear commercial KPIs and disciplined performance reporting. Operational Management Oversee end-to-end project delivery: planning, programming, resourcing, plant, and subcontractor management. Implement scalable systems to improve productivity, quality, and project outcomes. Ensure robust contracts management, risk control, and compliance. Leadership, Team Development & Recruiting Lead, mentor, and develop supervisors, PMs, engineers, and field teams. Build a high-performance culture with clear accountability. Take ownership of recruitment for critical operational and technical roles. Safety & Compliance Champion a proactive safety culture consistent with roadworks and civil excavation environments. Ensure compliance with WHS legislation, environmental standards, and client requirements. About You You’re a pragmatic, outcomes-focused civil leader who can balance commercial growth with disciplined delivery. You will likely bring: Solid background as a Project Manager / Senior PM / Construction Manager , stepping into or already operating at GM level. Strong client management capability and confidence leading major stakeholders. Demonstrated success delivering civil earthworks, subdivisions, and/or roadworks projects. Existing relationships or credibility with TMR / Main Roads and key SEQ civil clients. High financial literacy—comfortable owning profitability and performance. Strength in contracts and commercial risk , ideally including exposure to legal/contract manager functions. Plant-intensive project experience (wet/dry hire, utilisation, cost recovery).
