Position details

The Indian School of Business (ISB) is looking for candidates interested in carrying out research at the intersection of economics and machine learning. The selected candidate will work on projects related to innovation in India by employing machine learning methods on unstructured data, especially natural language processing (NLP). You should have training in computer science, data science or machine learning with strong analytical and quantitative, and, good communication skills. Demonstratable interest in applying machine learning to research problems in other disciplines like economics and business will be a huge plus.

We seek applications from motivated individuals with a strong academic background to work as Research Associates at ISB. Research Associates (RA) generally go on to pursue a Ph.D. in internationally renowned schools of management, or public policy after working at ISB for about 2-3 years. You will work with Dr Nishant Chadha (Director, Policy Research) and Prof. Deepa Mani (Professor, Information systems) on this research.

Your primary tasks will be

  • Extract unstructured data from relevant data repositiories
  • Clean and preprocess data to create structured formats that can be easily queried. Develop a searchable database for raw and processed data.
  • Disambiguate information in the data such as locations, names, etc.
  • Visualisation of data to support research
  • Assisting in the development of prediction models using machine learning
  • Assist in the drafting of project reports and research papers

Primary data collection through surveys will be an essential part of this project and in addition to the above you will also spend some time

  • Cordinating and collaborating with faculty members and other staff members

The position is best suited for a candidate with an interest in pursuing a PhD in economics, business or related disciplines within the next few years.

Required Qualifications and Skills

Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, or a related field from a top-tier institute.

Demonstrable quantitative ability and (verbal and written) communication skills are essential. The ability to credibly signal an interest in the project area will be an added advantage. The following skills are important

  • Strong experience in data extraction and preprocessing, especially with unstructured data (e.g., PDFs).
  • Proficiency in Python and libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, and Scikit-learn.
  • Familiarity with data cleaning and disambiguation techniques.
  • Experience working with large datasets and creating queryable structured data.
  • Strong understanding of data matching and integration methods.
  • Data visualization experience with tools like Tableau, Power BI, or Matplotlib.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail.

In addition to this high standards in terms of quality of work, attention to detail, ability to multi-task and commitment to task completion are required for the job. The willingness to read and learn from new research material is also critical.
