To independently check and review signalling design drawings as instructed and commensurate with own knowledge of First Signalling principles and experience. In addition to produce design drawings where specialist knowledge is required and when directed by the Design Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading the design of signalling minor and major works projects
  • Primary technical responsibility for Signal Engineering and Design.
  • Acting as the specialism Subject Matter Expert (SME) and lead Technical Advisor (TA) within the business and externally to clients and partners.
  • Seeking new opportunities and provision of bid support.
  • Oversee all specialism team members and competency requirements
  • Provide mentorship and competency assessments for the specialism team members
  • Production or verification and approval of railway signaling designs and other documentation at concept, preliminary and detailed design stages.
  • To produce integrated design details and supporting documentation using first principles for relevant parts of a new or altered signalling system.
  • To undertake complex signalling design with minimal rework in accordance with signalling design competency.
  • Work with other Team Leads and Heads of Service to manage resourcing of work.
  • Develop innovative ideas which deliver service and product growth, client satisfaction improvement or operational performance improvement. Develop business plans in support of the identified ideas and champion their development and implementation
  • To produce signalling specifications and other relevant documentation
  • To undertake and manage IDC checks associated with signalling design
  • Assist with internal and external audits.
  • Conform to internal corporate rules, processes and/or procedures.
  • To assist as required or instructed, the Design Manager in the execution of his duties.
  • Provide input in the compilation, review or approval of Quality Management System documentation.
  • Adhere to all statutory regulations, client standards or specifications where appropriate.
  • To assist other colleagues in achieving their IRSE design licences/ Australian Competencies, Mentoring or Training.
  • To undertake risk assessments and analysis using the appropriate tools and methods required.
  • To produce and verify signalling design details of Scheme/Signalling Plans, Control Tables, location designs, cable core plans, power schematics and interlocking wiring, REB designs, in SSI, RRI and ETCS.

Qualifications

  • The post holder should be educated in further education, preferably to degree, HND (Diploma) in Electrical/Electronics/Electronics and communication Engineering or equivalent level in a relevant subject.
  • Significant experience in production and delivery of complex design solutions utilizing a variety of existing and new technologies
  • Multiple formal rail Signalling design competency approvals from Accredited Rail Transport Operators and related competency frameworks as a Subject Matter Expert in design, verification and approval competencies, preferably:
  • IRSE (PDE) and TfNSW; and
  • One other (e.g. V/Line, ARTC or MTM)
  • Effective team leadership, client interface, budget and programme management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential
  • Broad experience of interlocking design and signalling scheme development including signalling overrun risk assessments
  • About 12-15 years of experience on the Railway Signalling of which at least 2-5 years’ experience on the Australian Rail Signalling projects is essential
  • Extensive design knowledge on Signalling Principles, RRI/SSI/ERTMS/Micro lock works
  • In-depth knowledge of standards and legislation
  • CAD literate in Micro-station (Should be able to check the various CAD standards in Micro station)
