Job Description
Data Warehouse and Decision Support team
This position is responsible for providing technical project management of the upcoming WISEdash
replacement project and providing technical expertise and services regarding Power BI report
maintenance, creation, and administration for the Department. Reports currently include data collected
through enterprise applications such as the WISEid, WISEdata, the Wisconsin State Assessment System,
and data reported in WISEdash.
The person in this position is responsible administering tenant and security configurations for Power BI
Service, as well as coaching business users on the Department’s BI tools and internal processes.
Objectives, priorities, and deadlines are established in consultation with the user, director and division
leadership and discussed biweekly during Agile/Scrum sprint retrospective and planning sessions.
Required qualifications:
Significant ability to apply project management techniques including creating project charters,
status reports and work breakdown structures and creating work requests in the form of user
stories. Ability to communicate project status to relevant and various stakeholders.
Experience creating processes and procedures for the administration and maintenance of the
Power BI environment, including change management procedures.
Expert knowledge of Power BI administration including security and tenant configuration in both
PBI Pro and Premium environments.
Expert knowledge and experience creating Power BI reports (data modelling, data visualization,
DAX)
Experience in data preparation and data warehousing projects, including dashboard tools,
reporting tools and other analytical tools.
Experience gathering requirements to data visualizations, dashboards and reports, including
translating business needs to technical solutions.
Preferred qualifications:
Experience with K-12 education data sector
Knowledge and use of Microsoft SSIS or similar Microsoft BI stack tools (SSRS, SSAS)
Experience or knowledge of working on an Agile/Scrum team (able to work well in a team, but
also highly self-motivated and solid communication skills)
Candidate Qualities:
Organized, self-motivated, independent lead worker needing limited managerial oversight.
Strong ability to communicate, in both verbal and written formats, in an effective and efficient
manner to staff, customers and vendors of varying levels of IT knowledge.
Enthusiastic in learning new technologies with excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
Very good communication and interpersonal skills and has the ability to work independently as
well as in a team environment.
Example tasks:
Create detailed technical project plans for the WISEdash replacement project. Oversee the plans
and ensure project(s) are progressing according to plan and otherwise highlight to management
that contingency plans may be needed.
Work closely with the Infrastructure team to analyze and prototype solutions to allow different
users to access Power BI reports, including the creation of new security groups and assessing
options for using Power BI Premium options (Premium Per User or Premium capacity
workspaces).
Create and/or regularly review and update BI internal processes and procedures.
Contrast and compare Azure cloud vs on-premises Microsoft licensing, product pricing, and
security configuration options.
Create new Power BI reports for internal or external use.
Amend existing Power BI reports, including SQL queries, visuals or DAX.
Provide recommendations and solutions for the creation of new reporting solutions.
Support and troubleshoot scheduled Power BI Service report updates.
Gather and analyze end user requirements for new or existing reports.
Complete functional & technical specifications to load data from disparate source systems into
Power BI in instances where the data does not belong in the data warehouse.
Knowledge about the scrum methodologies and agile practices
Work with MS SQL Server 2019+ and Oracle databases
Using TFS (Visual Studio/Azure Dev Ops) and Sharepoint for source code control, project related
document sharing and team collaboration.
Create Change Management tickets as required.
Ability to learn new technologies that will assist the team.
Other duties as assigned relating to the data warehouse or reporting projects.
