Key Responsibilities
Survey Planning & Preparation
Read and interpret project plans, specifications, and site layouts.
- Review legal documents (deed maps, title plans, previous surveys, easements) to understand property boundaries, constraints.
Plan field work: allocate resources (crew, equipment), schedule surveys.
Field Survey Work
Conduct boundary surveys, topographical/terrain surveys, feature surveys (buildings, roads, trees, utilities).
- Perform stake-outs / setting out for construction works (pegging, control points).
- Undertake as-built surveys post-construction or as structures are modified.
Use appropriate instruments: Total Station, GPS/GNSS, drones/UAVs (if needed), levels, etc.
Data Collection & Processing
Capture measurements with precision; verify field data.
- Process survey data: reduce field data, generate contours, cross-sections, digital terrain models.
Use CAD (AutoCAD / Civil 3D) and GIS software to prepare drawings, maps, site plans.
Legal & Regulatory Compliance
Ensure surveys adhere to local/national laws, regulations, and standards (zoning, land use, cadastral).
- Prepare or contribute to legal boundary descriptions & plats.
Coordinate with municipal / regulatory authorities for approvals or certifications.
Quality Assurance & Control
Validate accuracy of survey data; check errors, discrepancies; perform field checks.
- Maintain survey instrument calibration & equipment maintenance.
Ensure all field safety, site access, and environmental protocols are followed.
Collaborations & Reporting
Work with architects, civil engineers, urban planners, contractors for design & construction coordination.
- Provide regular progress reports, survey deliverables (maps, site plans, sketches).
Communicate with clients/stakeholders to resolve issues (boundary disputes, site constraints).
Team Supervision & Mentoring (if senior role)
Lead field survey crews.
- Supervise junior surveyors / technicians; provide guidance.
- Review work of subordinates for accuracy and completeness.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or related discipline.
- Professional license or certification in land/geomatic surveying may be required (depending on jurisdiction).
- Significant experience (typically 35+ years) in urban development / construction / cadastral surveying.
- Proficiency with surveying equipment: Total Station, GPS/GNSS, levels, etc.
- Strong skills in CAD (AutoCAD, Civil 3D) and GIS software.
- Good knowledge of legal aspects: property law, land titles, boundary regulations.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good mathematical / analytical skills.
- Physical ability to work outdoors, possibly in varied terrain and weather.
