Resident Doctor

- To accompany the Consultant on rounds, except when attending to an emergency. After a detailed workup of the patient, documentation should be done in the HIS and the concerned Consultant informed at the earliest
- To follow the Consultant's orders as per the multidisciplinary care plan, document and get it co-signed in the HIS by the Primary Consultant
- To check and update drug chart/prescription/repeat medications/medication administration record and inform the concerned Consultant as and when needed
- Shift notes should be entered at the start of each shift in the multidisciplinary care plan and co-signed by the Primary Consultant. The shift notes should be entered only after a thorough evaluation physically visiting the patient at the bedside
- Consultation referral/service requests for Laboratory, Pharmacy, and Radiology should be raised as ordered by the Consultant. Telephonic follow-up of the services and collection of reports should be done as needed promptly
- Even after documentation in the HIS, it is mandatory to call the Consultant telephonically and update all the clinical triggers - new admission, laboratory reports, radiology studies, clinical deterioration/patient complaints, referral completion, transfers, discharge, billing issues, etc. Non-compliance to telephonic conversation will be viewed very seriously
- For all ward calls, the Duty Medical Officer has to physically visit the patient and do the necessary evaluation. Once the evaluation is completed, the concerned Consultant has to be informed and documented in the HIS
- Be friendly with your team and work together as a team. Regular updating on investigations, clinical conditions and the latest advances is advocated, and for this UpToDate is available for everyone across the hospital as well as on the hand-held devices. Follow up on the patients you have admitted as a learning exercise and try to discuss the same with the Senior Registrars and/or consultants, as the patient’s bedside is the best textbook of medicine
- Maintain good communication channels with the patients and other members of the team and pass on information relevant to patient care to the Primary Consultants. Duty medical officers are requested to actively take part in ward rounds and enhance their knowledge on the patient management
- Stay updated with the latest medical knowledge, techniques, and practices
- Participate in departmental meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and audits
- Adhere to the safety norms of the hospital and follow both patient and staff safety rules
