Job Summary

The Attending Consultant in Transfusion Medicine provides expert clinical and laboratory services related to blood transfusion, ensuring the safe and effective use of blood products. This role involves overseeing blood bank operations, collaborating with healthcare teams, and participating in patient care, education, and research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Clinical Duties:

  2. Provide expert consultation on transfusion-related issues.

  3. Oversee the selection, compatibility testing, and administration of blood components.
  4. Ensure adherence to guidelines for blood product usage, including indications and contraindications.

  5. Manage transfusion reactions and develop protocols for their evaluation and management.

  6. Laboratory Oversight:

  7. Supervise laboratory operations in the blood bank, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., AABB, FDA).

  8. Implement and monitor quality assurance and quality control measures.

  9. Lead the development and validation of new laboratory procedures and technologies.

  10. Education and Training:

  11. Educate medical staff and trainees on transfusion medicine principles and practices.

  12. Conduct training sessions for laboratory personnel on technical skills and safety protocols.

  13. Present at local, regional, and national conferences and workshops.

  14. Collaboration and Leadership:

  15. Collaborate with other medical specialists to develop patient management plans.

  16. Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and committees related to transfusion medicine.

  17. Lead initiatives aimed at improving blood utilization and patient safety.

  18. Research and Development:

  19. Engage in clinical and laboratory research projects, contributing to advancements in transfusion medicine.

  20. Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific meetings.

  21. Stay updated on emerging trends and technologies in transfusion medicine.

  22. Administrative Responsibilities:

  23. Assist in the budgeting and strategic planning for the blood bank.

  24. Ensure proper documentation and reporting for regulatory compliance.
  25. Participate in hospital committees focused on quality improvement and patient profile
