JOB DESCRIPTION
The role of a Postgres DevOps DBA involves many responsibilities, skills, and tasks. A few of these include: Managing the database design and architecture, infrastructure management, ensuring high availability, security, and performing routine maintenance tasks (tuning, backup and recovery, and monitoring).
Database design and architecture
Two primary responsibilities of a Postgres DevOps DBA are database design and architecture. This role must have a greater understanding of the application's data storage requirements and the business logic involved. This knowledge includes designing and creating database schemas and tables. It also means configuring indexes and other database objects to optimize query performance, and choosing the right version of Postgres to use. The role must ensure the database is designed for scalability and maintainability, considering future growth and data retention needs.
Performance tuning
Another critical area of responsibility is performance tuning. A Postgres DevOps DBA must be able to identify and resolve performance issues by monitoring database performance metrics and analyzing query performance. The role must also have a deep understanding of the database and be able to configure it for optimal performance, including optimizing queries and indexes, tuning memory settings, and identifying and addressing performance bottlenecks.
Backup and recovery
Backup and recovery are also key areas of responsibility. What you will be doing :
Looking for a Senior Database Administrator to architect, build, and manage our PostgreSQL database infrastructure. This position will also serve as a coach for our software engineering and analytics teams in effective query and schema design, performance optimization, and all other database related matters.
The successful candidate will have advanced knowledge of relational database design, Postgres features and utilities, strong tuning and optimization skills, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple development and production Postgres environments.
Responsibilities include :
* Proactively monitoring database performance and troubleshooting issues
* Working cross-functionally with our engineers and analytics professionals to optimize queries, fix performance bottlenecks, improve existing schemas and design new ones
* Creating and maintaining change control and testing processes, reviewing and approving database modifications
* Conducting research and making recommendations on data-related products, services, protocols, and standards; planning for future growth of our data asset
* Reviewing development and deployment processes related to databases and identifying areas of improvement (such as online schema changes)
* Creating and maintaining documentation, troubleshooting playbooks, testing failover and recovery plans
* Improving database expertise company-wide
Qualifications :
* PostgreSQL DBA experience in a 24x7 production environment
* 8 to 10++ years of database management and engineering experience
* Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related technical degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience
* Exceptional SQL development and performance tuning skills
* Experience architecting a large-scale production database platforms
* Expertise with Postgres system metrics and optimization strategies
* Familiarity with system level metrics and practical use of common Linux utilities
* Mastery of one of the following scripting languages: Python, Perl, Bash
* Understanding of virtualization and clustered environments
* Great communication skills and a passion for both teaching and learning
