Role Description
The Buyer - Merchandiser for our sustainable retail brand is responsible for sourcing and purchasing environmentally friendly and ethically produced products. This role requires a strong understanding of sustainable practices, market trends, and consumer preferences. The ideal candidate will possess excellent negotiation skills, a passion for sustainability, and the ability to collaborate effectively with suppliers, internal teams, and other stakeholders to ensure a diverse and high-quality product assortment.
Key Responsibilities:
Product Sourcing and Selection:
Identify, select, and purchase sustainable and ethically sourced products that align with the company’s values and customer preferences.
Conduct thorough market research to stay informed about sustainability trends, competitor activities, and consumer demands.
Attend sustainability-focused trade shows, supplier meetings, and industry events to discover new and innovative products.
Vendor Relations and Management:
Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers and vendors who share our commitment to sustainability.
Negotiate terms, pricing, and contracts with vendors to secure the best deals while ensuring ethical sourcing and production practices.
Evaluate supplier performance and address any vendor-related issues to maintain high product quality and timely deliveries.
Sustainable Inventory Management:
Monitor inventory levels and manage stock replenishment to avoid overstock or stockouts, with a focus on minimizing waste.
Analyze sales data and market trends to forecast demand and adjust purchasing strategies to support sustainable goals.
Collaborate with the logistics team to ensure efficient and eco-friendly product distribution.
Merchandising Strategy and Execution:
Develop and implement merchandising strategies that promote sustainability and maximize sales and profitability.
Coordinate with the marketing team to plan and execute promotional activities and product launches that highlight sustainable features.
Ensure that product assortments reflect seasonal trends and meet customer expectations for sustainability.
Analysis and Reporting:
Analyze sales reports, inventory data, and market conditions to make informed purchasing decisions that support sustainability goals.
Prepare and present regular reports on product performance, sales trends, and purchasing activities with a focus on sustainability metrics.
Use data insights to optimize product assortment and improve purchasing processes, enhancing the brand’s sustainable impact.
Collaboration and Communication:
Work closely with the merchandising, marketing, and sales teams to align purchasing decisions with overall business and sustainability goals.
Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure smooth operations and successful product launches.
Provide product knowledge training and support to sales staff, emphasizing sustainable and ethical product attributes.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Merchandising, Sustainability, Marketing, or a related field.
Proven experience as a Buyer or in a similar role within the retail industry, preferably with a focus on sustainable products.
Strong understanding of sustainable practices, retail math, inventory management, and merchandising principles.
Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in using merchandising software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the sustainable retail industry or with eco-friendly product categories.
Knowledge of supply chain management and logistics with a focus on sustainability.
Familiarity with e-commerce and omni-channel retail strategies.
