Overall Purpose of the Role:

The Senior Fleet Superintendent is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of assigned chemical tankers. As a key member of the Ship Management Team, the role involves close collaboration with senior ship staff to uphold company standards and best practices in ship management, with a strong focus on safety and environmental protection.

☝️ Key Responsibilities:

  • Vessel Maintenance and Repair: Oversee and manage all activities related to maintenance, repairs, dry-docking, conversion, or modification of assigned vessels, ensuring compliance with company policies and safety standards.
  • Survey and Certification Compliance: Manage activities related to class and flag state surveys, certificate requirements, and maintain effective communication with relevant authorities.
  • Work Plan Coordination: Develop and execute dynamic work plans with ship commanders to ensure vessels meet client requirements. Provide regular progress reports to all stakeholders.
  • Planned Maintenance System (PMS): Ensure job descriptions and maintenance schedules for all machinery align with manufacturers' manuals, and accurately record repair history and spare parts usage in the management system.
  • Budget Management: Collaborate with the Fleet Cell team to prepare and control the running cost budget for vessels. Monitor expenditures and ensure they remain within budgetary limits, highlighting any unbudgeted expenses to the Fleet Manager promptly.
  • Performance Monitoring: Track vessel performance metrics such as speed, fuel, and lubricant consumption. Implement timely corrective actions when performance deviates from agreed parameters.
  • Vessel Visits and Reporting: Conduct regular vessel visits to assess general conditions, maintenance status, crew performance, safety measures, and environmental protection standards. Prepare detailed reports and discuss any issues or areas for improvement with ship commanders.
  • Client Liaison: Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned vessels, providing timely and accurate reports to clients on vessel management, expenses, and condition as per the Management Agreement.
  • Procurement and Inventory Management: Authorize and manage procurement of stores, spare parts, and repairs, ensuring vessels are adequately stocked for safe and efficient operations. Seek client approval for any unbudgeted expenditures.
  • Inspection and Audit Preparation: Work with the onboard team and HSEQ Superintendent to prepare vessels for inspections and audits by Port State Control (PSC), Flag, Oil Majors, and similar bodies. Ensure deficiencies are promptly addressed and closed.
  • Risk Management: Monitor and manage risks associated with assigned vessels and participate in risk assessment for shipboard procedures and operations as required.
  • Incident Management: Report any incidents or unexpected events affecting vessel performance to the management team immediately. Coordinate with the insurance team to handle claims with underwriters or P&I clubs.
  • Crew Management: Oversee the selection and performance appraisal of Senior Officers for assigned vessels, ensuring alignment with company standards and fostering their career development.
  • Relationship Building: Maintain a professional and effective relationship with senior ship staff, supporting them in their roles and aligning them with the company’s vision and performance standards.

⚓Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:

  • A recognized qualification in Engineering or Naval Architecture, or relevant sea-going experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a Fleet Superintendent in a technical department, preferably with chemical tankers.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both oral and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and interact effectively with people at all levels.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop creative solutions.
  • Basic financial understanding and experience in budget management.
