Role Summary


The Protection & Control Design Engineer will perform engineering activities to design, in control and protection systems within the HV/EHV electricity grid. This role involves ensuring that projects are executed in accordance with company procedures, contract specifications, and schedule commitments while adhering to international and local quality standards. Responsibilities include needs analysis, control & protection system design, conducting site surveys, creation of the technical documentations and taking the necessary responsibilities as a project design team member. The role requires collaboration with internal teams, external vendors, and end customers to ensure seamless integration and functionality of electrical design solutions.


Key Responsibilities


  • Develop and design Control & Protection systems for HV/EHV substations and power plants, ensuring reliable operation.
  • Prepare the technical design documents, including electrical schemes, wiring diagrams, single line diagrams, panel front views, panel layouts, cable schedules, interlocking schemes and technical specifications.
  • Carry out site surveys, collection the information of the current situation of the existing substations.
  • Review the technical design of the Control & Protection System drawings, detailed specification etc. with the customers for acceptance.
  • Implement adherence to international standards such as IEC 61850, IEEE standards, and NERC CIP for cybersecurity compliance.
  • Design systems incorporating renewable energy integration, energy storage systems, and smart grid technologies.
  • Has knowledge of protection system technologies and automation system technologies.
  • Utilize simulation tools for protection coordination, such as ETAP and DIgSILENT, to enhance design precision.
  • Possess sufficient knowledge and experience to work safely in an HV/EHV substation, adhering to HSE regulations and standards.
  • Interface secondary systems to auxiliary service systems, automation, telecommunication, monitoring and metering systems.
  • Possess mandatory knowledge for power system, substation and MV/HV switchgear.
  • Calculate the equipment sizing such as transformer, diesel generator, cable etc.
  • Provide technical support to site teams during testing and commissioning works to ensure proper functionality within high voltage networks.
  • Ensure all engineering documentation such as basic design documents, system configurations, and standard operating procedures are accurate.
  • Work closely with project managers, primary design engineers, automation engineers and other stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of control and protection systems.
  • Be accountable for identifying the correct Point(s) of Work and protecting the Working Party or any Third Parties through the provision of Special Operating Conditions or Restrictions.
  • Has knowledge of data transmission technologies and networking protocols.
  • Promote and enforces safe working environment by enforcing and supporting adequate HSE measures in all activities undertaken by himself & the team, follows ethics and compliances as per company guidelines.


Desired Experience


  • A minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience with specific focus in HV/EHV substations and powerplants.
  • Prior experience working with utilities in the UK or Europe, providing familiarity with regional regulations and operational practices, which is advantageous for immediate deployment to assignments.
  • Knowledge of design tools like AutoCAD for SLD’s, electrical schematics, cable schedules, wiring diagrams.
  • Has experience of protection equipment such as protection relays, BCU(Bay Control Unit), trip relays, AVR etc.
  • Familiarity with relevant drawing standards such as IEC61082-1 and IEC60617.
  • Knowledge of IEC61850 protocol for substation control & protection system.
  • Familiarity with factory and site acceptance tests from design to approval phase.
  • Good communication skills with leadership qualities for team working culture, ability to generate techno economic reports with apt writing skills.
