Job Title: Fettling & Heat Treatment Incharge Foundry

Department: Foundry (Fettling & Heat Treatment Section)

Reporting To: Foundry Manager / Production Head

Job Purpose:

To supervise and manage fettling and heat treatment operations of castings, ensuring proper finishing, quenching, and heat treatment cycles to meet required mechanical properties, quality standards, and customer specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

Fettling Operations

• Supervise fettling activities including removal of runners, risers, burrs, flashes, and grinding of castings.
• Ensure fettling is carried out as per drawings, dimensional requirements, and quality standards.
• Monitor fettling equipment (grinders, chippers, cutting machines) and reduce rework.

Heat Treatment & Quenching

• Plan, schedule, and monitor heat treatment cycles (normalizing, annealing, tempering, stress relieving, etc.) as per metallurgical requirements.
• Supervise quenching processes (water,) to achieve desired hardness and mechanical properties.
• Ensure proper furnace operation, temperature control, and cycle recording.
• Maintain heat treatment records and ensure traceability for each batch.

Quality Control

• Coordinate with the Quality & Metallurgy department for inspection and testing after fettling and heat treatment.
• Ensure castings achieve desired microstructure, hardness, and strength.
• Segregate and report non-conforming castings.

Manpower & Team Handling

• Supervise fettling operators, grinders, heat treatment furnace operators, and helpers.
• Assign work, monitor productivity, and ensure discipline on the shop floor.
• Conduct training for safe furnace operation, quenching techniques, and fettling practices.

Safety & Compliance

• Enforce strict safety practices in fettling and heat treatment areas (PPE, handling of hot jobs, quenching hazards, dust/noise protection).
• Conduct safety awareness programs and ensure compliance with company safety standards.

Resource & Process Management

• Optimize use of consumables (grinding wheels, quenching media, furnace fuel/power).
• Coordinate with maintenance for preventive maintenance of furnaces, quenching tanks, and fettling equipment.
• Implement process improvements to reduce cycle time and improve efficiency.

Coordination & Reporting

• Coordinate with melting, molding, machining, and quality teams for smooth operations.
• Prepare and maintain records of daily production, heat treatment cycles, rejections, and manpower utilization.
• Submit reports on performance, bottlenecks, and improvement suggestions to management.

Key Skills & Competencies:

• Knowledge of fettling and finishing techniques for castings.
• Strong understanding of heat treatment processes (annealing, normalizing, tempering, quenching, stress relieving).
• Ability to interpret metallurgical requirements, hardness charts, and casting drawings.
• Leadership, team management, and problem-solving skills.
• Safety awareness in foundry, fettling, and furnace operations.
