Mechanical Design Engineer – Advanced Deployable Structures Location: Pune Employment Type: Full-time Company: Altair About the Role Altair is seeking a highly capable, creative Mechanical Design Engineer to join an advanced engineering program focused on designing and developing full-scale deployable structures for strategic defense applications. The role involves creating innovative, lightweight, modular systems that can be rapidly assembled, transported, and deployed in demanding environments. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to translate conceptual requirements into manufacturable mechanical solutions using metal frameworks, inflatable-supported geometries, and hybrid structural assemblies. Key Responsibilities Design lightweight, modular mechanical structures suitable for rapid deployment and field use. Develop detailed 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings, BOMs, and assembly documentation. Work with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical frameworks with fabric-based or inflatable components. Conduct structural evaluations to ensure stability, durability, and environmental suitability. Support prototyping, testing, and refinement of new concepts and mechanisms. Collaborate with fabrication partners to ensure seamless transition from design to production. Maintain compliance with engineering quality standards, safety requirements, and program guidelines. Required Skills & Qualifications Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline. 5 years of experience in mechanical or product design (R&D experience is a plus). Strong proficiency with CAD tools such as SolidWorks and CATIA. Demonstrated experience in designing lightweight or modular structures , frameworks, or deployable systems. Good understanding of mechanical systems, materials, and manufacturing processes. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and prototyping skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, research-driven environment. Preferred Qualifications Experience with inflatable structures, tensile fabric systems, or hybrid material integration. Exposure to defense, aerospace, mobility, or field-deployable products. Knowledge of rapid prototyping methods and fabrication technologies.
