Senior Android Kotlin Consultant

About the Job

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Android Kotlin Consultant (Onsite Freelancer) to optimize an existing Android application for performance and concurrency, ensuring compatibility across Android versions 11 to 15 (API levels 30–35), including all Google Pixel variants. The consultant will resolve critical performance bottlenecks, concurrency issues, and compatibility challenges to prepare the app for production deployment on the Google Play Store.

This is a contract-based, onsite position with a duration of 4–6 weeks, depending on project complexity.

Key ResponsibilitiesTesting and Debugging

• Implement real-time detection and response using the freeRASP (Talsec) framework to enhance app security.

• Test on real devices (especially Pixel Fold, Pixel 9) and emulators using Android Device Streaming or similar services.

• Debug issues using ADB, Logcat, and LeakCanary to identify and resolve crashes or ANRs.

Performance Optimization

• Profile and diagnose performance bottlenecks (e.g., UI jank, memory leaks, high CPU usage) using Android Studio tools (CPU Profiler, Memory Profiler, Systrace).

• Optimize app startup time, UI rendering (Jetpack Compose or View-based), and resource-intensive operations (e.g., image loading, database queries, network calls).

• Reduce battery consumption and memory footprint for a seamless user experience.

Concurrency Management

• Refactor asynchronous code to use Kotlin Coroutines with proper scopes (viewModelScope, lifecycleScope) and dispatchers (Dispatchers.IO, Dispatchers.Default).

• Fix concurrency issues such as race conditions, deadlocks, and improper task cancellation.

• Replace deprecated threading mechanisms (e.g., AsyncTask) with modern solutions like WorkManager or coroutines.

Android Compatibility

• Ensure compatibility across Android API levels 30 (Android 11) to 35 (Android 15), including Google Pixel-specific optimizations (e.g., Tensor chip support).

• Implement backward compatibility using Compat libraries (e.g., ActivityCompat, ContextCompat) and feature toggles.

• Handle Android 15-specific changes, such as predictive back gestures, biometric updates, and foreground service restrictions.

Play Store Deployment

• Resolve dependency conflicts and update libraries (e.g., Jetpack, Firebase, Google Play Services) to stable, compatible versions.

• Set up beta testing tracks and staged rollouts for pre-release validation.

Codebase Maintenance

• Audit and refactor legacy Java/Kotlin code for maintainability and performance, leveraging Kotlin 2.2.0 features (e.g., K2 compiler, sealed interfaces).

• Optimize Gradle build configurations to reduce build times and resolve dependency conflicts.

Required Skills and QualificationsExperience

• 5+ years of Android development experience with a focus on Kotlin.

• Proven track record of optimizing performance and concurrency in production Android apps.

• Experience deploying apps to the Google Play Store with App Bundle (.aab) format.

Technical Skills

• Expert-level proficiency in Kotlin (preferably and coroutines for structured concurrency.

• Strong knowledge of Jetpack libraries (Room, WorkManager, Navigation, Compose) and third-party tools (Glide/Coil, Retrofit/Ktor).

• Familiarity with Android compatibility across API levels 30–35, including Pixel-specific optimizations.

• Expertise in profiling tools (Android Studio Profiler, Systrace) and testing frameworks (JUnit, Espresso).

• Experience with Gradle, KSP (Kotlin Symbol Processing), and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Bitrise).

Soft Skills

• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to debug complex issues.

• Excellent communication skills to collaborate with stakeholders and document findings.

• Ability to work independently and deliver results within tight deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Kotlin Multiplatform for cross-platform considerations.

• Familiarity with reactive programming (RxJava, Flow) for complex asynchronous workflows.

• Prior work on apps targeting Google Pixel devices (e.g., Pixel 9, Pixel Fold).

• Knowledge of Android 15-specific features and Play Store policy updates.
