Co-Teacher Job Description and Expectations

The primary responsibility of the co-teacher is to support the learning of students and help the homeroom teacher with clerical tasks. While planning is the purview of the homeroom teacher, co-teachers are welcome to share opinions and observations. The co-teacher and homeroom teachers are partners in the students’ learning journey.

When the students are in the class, the co-teacher works with students, in small groups or one-on-one. When students are not in the class, co-teachers are to discuss lessons, assessments and planning with the homeroom teacher, as well as handle the clerical tasks.

Initiative and follow-through are appreciated. As the co-teacher becomes confident with IB philosophies and practices, leading and presenting concepts can be added to their day.

The working hours of a co-teacher are 7:45-4:00; like homeroom teachers, the only breaks are during recess. Co-teachers are expected to do recess duties and stay until 5pm on Wednesday to attend professional development.

While filling in PYP Planners is not a job requirement, co-teacher input and reflections are very important.

Responsibilities and expectations:

Collaborate with the homeroom teacher on planning

Offer suggestions and observations regarding the progress and support required for individual students

Co-plan and work with small groups or individual students who require extra support as identified by the homeroom teacher

With the homeroom teacher, identify students who need additional support for handwriting/penmanship, phonics, reading fluency, and basic maths skills such as multiplication tables

Assist the homeroom teacher in monitoring behaviour

Provide supervision of students to and from the class as required

To be present in specialist lessons to support the specialist teacher as required (early years only)

Collaborate with the homeroom teacher to ensure displays support the learning needs of students

When the students are not in class and the co-teacher is not required to accompany them, then the co-teacher should be planning activities for the students she has been assigned to, checking their work, making notes on how to improve their learning, and discussing student progress with the homeroom teacher

Carry out DIBELS assessments as required by the homeroom teacher

Ensure the classroom is stocked with supplies as required

Undertake school-based professional development

Write two self-appraisal reflections per year detailing their progress and development as a co-teacher

Co-teachers should refrain from speaking to or emailing parents and should let the homerooms teachers handle this

The Homeroom teacher will:

1. Clarify what the co-teacher will do in each lesson when planning. This will be written so the co-teacher knows in advance and asks needed questions before the lesson.

The school administrators will:

1. Provide a mentor for new co-teachers. If the mentor cannot answer any questions, please see the Head of Primary or Coordinators.

2. For six weeks, there will be weekly meetings with the co-teacher, homeroom teacher, and head of primary to establish partnership parameters and support strong communication. After that there will be a monthly meeting for the first year of employment.

3. The head of primary will meet with new co-teachers to see how things are going.In the beginning this will be once a week for 2 months, then once a month for 3 months.

4. Release time will be provided for the co-teacher to be trained in IB philosophies and practices by the EY/PYP Coordinators.
