Job description


Collective Newsroom is looking for a talented Senior Data Journalist specialising in Visual Journalism for BBC News Indian Languages division.


This role focuses on presenting data-driven insights through charts, maps, and other visual storytelling methods. You will work closely with designers, developers and journalists in the team.


Using your strong news judgment and reporting skills, you will create graphics and stories that are timely, insightful, and enhance our coverage.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities


  • Data Visualisation: Collaborate with designers, developers, and journalists to produce compelling visual stories, quick graphics, and analyse large datasets tailored to our regional audience.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with digital and TV journalists, developers and designers in India and at other BBC News locations to help them interpret data and maintain effective communication with language service editors.
  • Story Development: Plan and develop data-led visual stories that add depth to existing reporting, particularly for calendar events and ongoing stories.
  • Data Support: Assist bureau journalists with data-related queries and provide visualisations to explain complex stories.
  • Election Coverage: Leverage your experience with Indian state and general elections to write detailed analyses before, during, and after elections.


Knowledge, skills, training and experience


  • Data Handling: Proficient in finding, cleaning, and analysing large datasets from reliable sources. Capable of creating databases using alternative methods when data is not readily available, including a clear methodology and limitations of findings.
  • Visualisation Tools: Skilled in using Google Sheets and third-party tools like Flourish for data visualisation. Experience with R for visualisation and analysis will be an added advantage. Use of other tools and knowledge about latest trends is an advantage.
  • Programming Knowledge: Familiarity with programming languages like R and Python is preferred, though not mandatory.
  • Industry Insight: Strong understanding of the Indian news landscape, close eye on trends in India and around the world and having a network of industry peers.
  • Creative Design: Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite to collaborate with designers on creating full digital experiences and visual elements.
  • Efficiency and Deadlines: Ability to work efficiently under various deadlines, balancing short-term breaking news tasks with longer-term projects.
  • Language preference: English. Knowledge of any other language that the BBC operates in India would be an advantage.


Additional Skills


  • Independent Data Sourcing: Able to independently source and clean data, creating comprehensive databases when necessary.
  • Innovative Visualisation: Develop innovative visualisations that simplify complex data for broad audiences.
  • Comprehensive Reporting: Experience in writing detailed analyses for major events, including elections.
