Head of Costing - Finance

The role responsible for overseeing and managing the costing processes specific to the pharmaceutical and generics business. This includes calculating costs associated with the development, manufacturing, and distribution of biopharmaceuticals and generic drugs. The Lead of Costing works closely with the R&D, operations, procurement, and finance teams to ensure accurate cost data and the implementation of cost-effective practices across the business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the costing process for both Biocon's proprietary biopharmaceutical products and its generics portfolio, ensuring accurate cost estimation, allocation, and analysis.
  • Develop and maintain cost models for drug development, manufacturing, and commercialization, accounting for variables such as raw materials, manufacturing overheads, and R&D costs.
  • Collaborate with the R&D, Regulatory Affairs, and Operations teams to ensure that product development costs, clinical trial expenses, and manufacturing costs are accurately captured.
  • Perform detailed cost analysis of biopharmaceuticals and generics to track variances from budget, identify cost-saving opportunities, and recommend pricing strategies.
  • Review and analyze cost structures for drug manufacturing, ensuring that all direct and indirect costs are incorporated, including APIs, excipients, and production labor.
  • Prepare reports and insights for senior management related to product profitability, including for both new products and established generics.
  • Manage costing for contract manufacturing (if applicable) and ensure compliance with industry-specific regulations, including Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Maintain costing for inventory and finished goods in line with regulatory standards and reporting requirements.
  • Provide detailed cost reports for both high-value biopharmaceuticals and generics, ensuring that these are presented to senior management for effective decision-making on pricing, margins, and product launch strategies.
  • Lead financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes for Biocon's manufacturing operations, covering both proprietary biopharmaceutical products and generics.
  • Monitor and manage the cost structure of manufacturing, including raw materials, labor, overheads, and supply chain costs, ensuring alignment with budgetary constraints and business objectives.
  • Provide financial support for production decisions, including capital expenditure (CapEx) analysis for new production facilities, machinery, and technology, especially related to biologics and generics manufacturing.
  • Conduct variance analysis to track manufacturing expenses and identify opportunities for process improvements and cost reductions in both biopharmaceutical and generics production.
  • Collaborate with operations teams to optimize production efficiency, capacity planning, and supply chain management, while adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with pharmaceutical industry standards and regulations, including cost accounting for materials used in GMP-compliant production.
  • Support senior leadership in strategic decision-making by providing financial insights on profitability, cost trends, and manufacturing performance.
  • Develop and maintain financial models to analyze the profitability of different manufacturing processes (e.g., contract manufacturing, in-house production).
  • Liaise with internal and external auditors to ensure manufacturing finance operations are compliant with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Drive cost-saving initiatives and continuous improvements in manufacturing finance processes, focusing on both operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.

Key Skills:

  • Extensive experience in costing for the pharmaceutical and generics industries, with a strong understanding of drug development, manufacturing, and regulatory compliance.
  • In-depth knowledge of cost accounting principles, product costing, and financial analysis in a biopharma context.
  • Strong expertise in managing costing for both high-margin biopharmaceuticals and cost-competitive generic products.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams, including R&D, regulatory, and operations, to capture accurate cost data.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to report findings to management and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, Accounting, or a related field (CIMA, MBA, or similar certifications are preferred).
  • 14+years of experience in costing within the pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical industry, including generics manufacturing.
  • Strong working knowledge of industry standards, including GMP, and pharmaceutical regulatory requirements.
