Optical Systems Engineer / AstronomerRole: Founding Optical Systems Engineer Type: Full time, In Person Location: Bangalore Compensation (CTC): INR 20-35L+ (Including ESOPs) Joining Date: January 2025About the RoleWe're catching lasers from space to build the optical highway to the cosmos.  Join us as an Optical Systems Engineer to design and optimize telescope systems, infrared optics, and precision instruments for satellite-to-ground communication links. You'll bridge optical design, astronomical instrumentation, and systems engineering to build hardware that works from lab bench to orbit.ResponsibilitiesDesign and optimize telescope systems for free-space optical communication (Cassegrain, Newtonian, custom configurations)Develop infrared optical systems and lens designs for 980nm and 1550nm wavelengthsCharacterize telescope performance: aberrations, wavefront quality, throughput, and pointing accuracyPerform optical system simulations using ray tracing and diffraction analysis (Zemax/CODE V)Design optical layouts for beam expanders, collimators, and receiver opticsConduct atmospheric turbulence analysis and adaptive optics system designOptimize optical link budgets considering atmospheric effects, telescope aperture, and detector sensitivityPerform precision alignment and testing using interferometry and wavefront sensorsIntegrate optical systems with mechanical mounts and tracking platformsSupport field testing and outdoor optical link experimentsRequirementsB.Tech/M.Tech/M.Sc/PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Optical Engineering, or PhysicsProficiency in optical design software (Zemax, CODE V, or similar)Strong understanding of geometrical and physical optics, aberration theory, and diffractionExperience with optical testing and characterization methodsKnowledge of telescope designs and infrared optical systemsFamiliarity with optical testing equipment: interferometers, wavefront sensors, beam profilersProgramming skills in Python/MATLAB for simulation and data analysisAbility to perform link budget calculations and system performance analysisNice-to-HaveExperience with free-space optical communication or laser communication systemsKnowledge of atmospheric turbulence effects and error correction codes in optical systemsExperience with optical ground stations or astronomical observatoriesFamiliarity with satellite tracking and orbital mechanicsPrevious work with space-based optical systemsWhat We OfferOpportunity to design telescope and optical systems for next-gen space communicationWorld-class optical facilities and access to telescope infrastructureFast-moving, high-ownership role with direct impact on product performanceFounding Engineer equity👤 How to ApplySend your resume and a brief note about your interests to: careers@qosmic.space
