Principal Scientist Materials and Supply Chain


As a Principal Scientist Materials and Supply Chain, you will lead a team who are responsible for technical specifications and recommendations across all key battery materials and components. You and your team will ensure the successful selection and validation of the battery raw material supply chain, enabling the development of highly competitive cells.


The focus of this role will be to support the global manufacturing operations and procurement teams to recommend, assess and down select materials based on specific project requirements. This is an opportunity to join a well-established and growing R&D team focusing on supply chain interactions and state of the art offerings in order to guide and drive cell development from a material point of view.


Key Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Lead a team at the interface between Agratas R&D, Global Procurement and Suppliers to define and select current and future battery materials and components.
  • Draft material specifications for RFI and RFQ
  • Contribute within the team to material/technology landscaping and to ensure that material roadmaps and supply chains align with technology upgrades
  • Identify and communicate material trends and risks to the wider R&D team and company
  • Assess, compare and translate supplier technical capabilities for the wider company
  • Engage with and foster productive technical relationships with suppliers, digest and contextualise complex scientific concepts in discussion.
  • Ensure decisions are driven by company values to deliver high performance, cost effective and environmentally friendly cells and batteries



Essential Experience:


  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science or a related subject.
  • Experience with RFI and RFQ processes and material/supplier validation processes
  • Subject matter expert in at least one key battery material with a well-rounded understanding of battery technology, cell processing & intermediates (e.g. electrodes, slurries)
  • Experience in chemical or electrochemical analysis, including cell building, testing & failure analysis
  • Understanding of cell economics, materials supply costs, key material/technology suppliers.
  • Leading engineers/scientists in multi-functional teams and technical projects: understanding business needs, setting objectives, measuring progress and reporting to senior stakeholders
  • Initiating and enforcing safe working systems in the laboratory



Desired Experience:


  • Strong knowledge of battery materials, characterisation techniques and QC systems for ensuring quality
  • Experience of cell development, preferably inside NPI/NPD
  • Strong understanding of statistical analysis, data processing and interpretation
  • Additional industrial experience from within the battery materials supply chain is highly advantageous.
  • Understanding of the strict confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information involved in material transfer agreements, non-disclosure agreements and joint-development agreements.
