Senior Cloud Engineer (AWS)
Job Summary
The Senior Cloud Engineer (AWS) will be responsible for developing, maintaining, optimising and supporting the cloud infrastructure that supports Datapel's Warehouse Management System (WMS) and relevant integrations in production. This role will focus on deploying, supporting, and scaling Windows Server environments on AWS, provisioning and managing SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases, migrating customer databases between instances to optimise performance, managing backups and recovery, and ensuring the reliability of hybrid cloud applications including Windows Forms applications delivered via Thinfinity VirtualUI. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in infrastructure automation, production-grade cloud operations, and a focus on performance and reliability.
Primary Responsibilities
Cloud Infrastructure Management and Optimisation
- Deploy, configure, and maintain Windows Server virtual machines within AWS.
- Provision, manage, and optimise performance for SQL Server and PostgreSQL database instances.
- Plan and execute migrations of customer environments and databases across AWS instances and services.
- Support and maintain hybrid cloud environments, as well as web applications and serverless components.
- Ensure high availability for Windows-based applications delivered through Thinfinity VirtualUI.
- Proactively identify and implement cost-saving opportunities across the AWS infrastructure without compromising performance or reliability.
Production Operations and Reliability Engineering:
- Monitor the production environment to ensure optimal system uptime and performance across all customers.
- Implement automation solutions to support proactive maintenance, resource scaling, and incident response.
- Apply infrastructure-as-code principles for repeatable and reliable cloud deployments.
- Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure, networking, and database issues affecting production systems.
Application Hosting and Optimisation:
- Host and manage .NET applications (Web APIs, and ASP.NET apps) across IaaS,
- PaaS, and serverless environments.
- Host and manage legacy Windows applications in a virtual server environment.
- Evaluate and implement best-fit hosting strategies for components of the WMS stack.
- Support Windows Server environments, including maintenance updates and upgrading versions.
- Collaborate with development teams to align infrastructure with application architecture and release cycles.
Technical Development and Collaboration:
- Work closely with the Development Manager and DevOps teams to define cloud architecture and operational strategies.
- Develop and maintain documentation for environment configurations, processes, and recovery procedures.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education & Experience:
- 7+ years of professional experience in cloud infrastructure engineering, with a focus on AWS.
- Proven experience deploying and managing Windows Server environments in production.
- Strong experience in SQL Server and PostgreSQL database provisioning, performance tuning, and migration.
- Familiarity with hybrid cloud application delivery, including virtualized desktop or app streaming technologies (e.g., Thinfinity, Citrix) for legacy applications.
- Experience hosting .NET applications across IaaS, PaaS, and serverless AWS services (e.g., EC2, Lambda).
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field (preferred).
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency with AWS services: EC2, RDS, CloudWatch, IAM, Systems Manager, Lambda, etc.
- Strong knowledge of Windows Server and remote access configurations.
- Familiarity with infrastructure automation tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible).
- Skilled in scripting and automation (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Python).
- Experience with version control (e.g., Git) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Bonus: Experience with networking, firewalls, and secure cloud connectivity (e.g., VPC, VPN).

This role is vital to ensuring Datapel's WMS platform remains reliable, scalable, and cost-efficient in production. By managing and modernising the cloud infrastructure, the engineer will directly impact customer satisfaction, operational performance, and system resilience.
