Position Overview:

A Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing tailored instruction and support to students with learning disabilities and other special needs. This role involves creating and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs), collaborating with other educators and professionals, and fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.


Key Responsibilities:


Develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs):

  • Assess students' abilities, strengths, and needs to develop personalized learning goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with parents, other teachers, and specialists to create comprehensive IEPs that address academic, social, and behavioral goals.


Deliver Specialized Instruction:

  • Adapt teaching methods, materials, and assessments to accommodate students' diverse learning styles and needs.
  • Provide direct instruction in academic subjects, life skills, and social-emotional development, as outlined in students' IEPs.


Provide Support and Differentiation:

  • Offer one-on-one or small group instruction to reinforce concepts, clarify misunderstandings, and provide additional support as needed.
  • Modify curriculum content, assignments, and assessments to meet individual students' learning abilities and preferences.


Monitor Progress and Adjust Instruction:

  • Regularly assess students' progress toward IEP goals and objectives using a variety of assessment tools and methods.
  • Analyze assessment data to identify areas of strength and areas needing improvement, and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.


Collaborate with Stakeholders:

  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians to provide updates on students' progress, discuss concerns, and solicit feedback.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, specialists, and support staff to ensure coordinated support for students with learning disabilities.


Promote Inclusive Practices:

  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued, respected, and supported.
  • Implement strategies to promote peer interaction, collaboration, and acceptance among students with and without disabilities.


Stay Informed and Engaged:

  • Stay abreast of best practices, research findings, and developments in the field of special education.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, workshops, and conferences to enhance knowledge and skills.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field.
  • State certification/licensure as a Special Education Teacher.
  • Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Strong understanding of various learning disabilities and their impact on academic performance.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to supporting students with diverse needs.


Working Conditions:

Special Education Teachers typically work in schools, both mainstream and specialized settings. They may work with students individually, in small groups, or in inclusive classroom settings. The job may involve occasional meetings outside of regular school hours, such as IEP meetings with parents/guardians or professional development sessions.
