Furniture Designer –

Furniture designers will create designs for furniture and other items that will be mass-produced, produced in small batches or made as one-off individual pieces.

They’re tasked with creating new pieces that are both aesthetically pleasing and functional, while also ensuring that these designs can be mass-produced at a reasonable cost.

Furniture designers must have an eye for detail and an understanding of human anatomy and physiology. They must also be able to work well in a team environment—they rely on engineers, woodworkers, fabricators, etc., to help bring their ideas to life.

Responsibilities –

  • Studying, researching and planning various styles of furniture design
  • Staying informed about design trends and developments
  • Selecting suitable materials, which might include wood, metal, and textiles
  • Using software packages such as AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks and Photoshop
  • Creating detailed sketches or drawings of furniture pieces or other products that can be used by manufacturers for mass production
  • Liaising with craftsmen or production department staff (such as production managers, marketing staff and design engineers) about the process of construction or manufacture
  • Evaluating issues such as pricing and fixing costs, fashion, purchasing, safety, materials and manufacturing methods and techniques
  • Creating computerized models of designs using specialized computer software

Skill Set –

  • Rhino or SolidWorks with Blender for 3D; KeyShot for rendering (optional); AutoCad for Drawings
  • Investigating appropriate materials and production processes.
  • Analytical skills-The use of logic or reasoning skills is important
  • Problem-solving skills-Industrial designers identify complex design problems such as a product's need, size, and cost, anticipate production issues, develop alternatives, evaluate options, and implement solutions.

  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional team members
  • Ability to effectively communicate and persuade around design concepts
  • Passion for design; not satisfied with the status quo and always thinking of ways to improve
  • Work experience as a Product Designer or similar role
  •  Experience in industrial design
