Naval Architect
Work location : Bangalore /Hyderabad /Chennai
About the role:
As SME (Subject Matter Expert) – Naval Architect, you will help our team of Data Scientists to build digital solutions for large Container Ships, primarily in areas like helping build a ship digital twin, fuel consumption-power curves, vessel hydrodynamic performance models, predictive models for Parametric / Synchronous rolling in rough sea weather conditions. You would also help build solutions for diagnosing hull fouling margins, Engine Power decomposition etc. You will guide the project teams in understanding the business requirements, translating the requirements in actionable tasks, help build impactful solutions, drive adoption and articulate value. On a typical workday, you could be doing one or more of the following:
- Analyse the container ship operations data (historical, noon reports, EEXI reports, HF data)
- Help conceptualise building Digital Twin of large Container vessels (new and old ships in the fleet)
- Identify all the relevant data needed to build Container Ship Digital Twin
- Help build and guide the Data Scientists with the right and proactive domain inputs for building the Digital Twin
- Help build Digital Twin models that include Fuel Performance Curves, Vessel Hydrodynamic Stability, Vessel Safety thresholds at bad weather conditions, Power decomposition and other models as may be needed
- Help model effect of windage, vessel speed, Drift, Trim, heel, hull condition, propeller condition, Engine condition, waves impact, wind impact, currents impact and other parameters affecting the fuel consumption
- Help build for each vessel in scope, derived parameters like Trim, Metacentric Height, Windage etc from various sources of base data
- Help build tactical solutions for avoiding Parametric and Synchronous rolling, including the methods to alert concerned people with the right recommendations
- Help build the best way to share vessel digital twin models for weather re-routing where necessary
- Help build AI/ML solutions that can recommend vessel speed through water, overconsumption alerts, fouling margin etc
- Help build visualisation of the Vessel Digital Twin for the end-users, if necessary as per project deliverables
- Help scan and recommend process improvements, statutory guideline and updates, benchmarking (where necessary) in the areas mentioned above
If you are looking for an entrepreneurial environment, and are passionate to work on unstructured business problems that can be solved using data, we would like to talk to you.

- About 12-20 years of experience in naval architecture – ship design, vessel digital twin, fuel performance curves etc for reputed shipping companies or in services companies serving the shipping industry
- Atleast 5 years of hands-on experience in conceptualising and building Container Vessel fuel consumption curves and other ship hydrodynamic performance models
- Hands on experience of building or running solutions like Vessel Digital Twin, Vessel Hydrodynamic Simulation etc
- Excellent appreciation and/or experience of Data Science subjects – Simulation, Optimization, ML models etc that may be relevant to deliver the results
- Excellent consulting skills – leadership in uncertain and ambiguous situations, problem solving and trouble shooting skills, solutioning and design thinking skills
- Excellent communication skills – spoken, written and in client facing roles
- Ability to guide teams on developing analytics solution blueprints to client problems which balance business context and technical details
- Ability to analyze pros-and-cons of different analytic options in the context of multitude of business problems, and articulate such choices to technical and business audiences.
- Ability to build compelling stories from data / model outputs to convey insights to business stakeholders, and drive acceptance & adoption of recommended actions.
