The Role


At BIG W, our ambition is to become a purpose-led digital retailer enabled by a great store network. Central to this ambition is the way we use data, analytics and insights to make better, more informed strategic customer, team and business decisions and deliver automation and artificial intelligence capabilities to accelerate progress towards our ambition.

The Data Engineer Manager is responsible for designing, building and maintaining efficient, scalable data pipelines and structures that enable analytics to be conducted to meet business needs.


Key Responsibilities


  • Lead and enhance BIG W's Asia Data Engineering capability, fostering the unlocking of our data's rich value to deliver exceptional experiences for customers and team members.
  • Mentor and lead the BIG W Data Engineering Chapter, overseeing a technical team of 5 data engineering professionals spread across multiple delivery squads.
  • Working with stakeholders across the Woolworths Group, evolve our Data Governance practices, ensuring our usage of data is safe & well governed
  • Communicate with leaders across Retail Analytics to translate business requirements to clear data engineering requirements, specifications and delivery plans
  • Provide technical thought leadership in designing data assets and pipelines to support business intelligence, data analytics and data science use cases
  • Partner with Woolworths Group Technology and Group Data & Analytics leaders to identify, evaluate and deploy emerging technologies and methodologies to accelerate our Data Engineering capabilities
  • Define our BIG W Data Engineering standards, ensuring the processes and techniques we use to deliver Data Engineering capability are consistent, trusted and fit-for-purpose across our delivery squads. You will ensure the quality of technical delivery through your expert knowledge of efficient & production worth SQL, ETL, and data orchestration tools & techniques (experience within GCP a significant advantage)
  • Evangelise the use of Data Engineering capabilities, and coach cross-functional teams to understand where and when different techniques can create value
  • Support the cultural and capability shift of the organisation towards Data, Analytics and Insights
  • Promote the use of Data, Analytics and Insights as means to answer the most important, well defined problems and curious questions to address customer, team and business challenges
  • Take a visible & leadership role in nurturing a culture of curiosity and insights-led mindset at BIG W


About You


To be successful in this role and thrive in our high performing and innovative culture, you will have a good understanding of how data & analytics can unlock the potential of the business and help realise BIG W’s ambition of becoming a purpose led digital retailer.


In addition, you will:


  • Bring 8-10+ years of experience in data engineering or data warehousing in Cloud environments (GCP/AWS/Azure).
  • Candidates with fewer years of experience but strong technical knowledge on our requirements would also be considered for the Data Engineer role.
  • Demonstrate proven leadership as a Data Engineering Manager, with a track record of cultivating a data engineering capability and community in a large organisation.
  • Exhibit strong coding skills in Python, SQL, and other programming languages.
  • Ideally, have experience with GCP Data and Analytic services such as BigQuery, Cloud Composer/Airflow, and Cloud Function.
  • Possess a continuous improvement mindset and a passion for supporting others to achieve business outcomes.
  • Have experience leading a technical team of 5 or more data engineering professionals across multiple delivery squads.
  • Deeply understand and passionately advocate for data, analytics, and insights, recognising their potential to address real customer, team, and business challenges.
  • Have led the adoption of a culture of curiosity and insights-led mindset in previous roles.
