Job Summary
The Mainframe Migration Architect will play a critical role in leading and executing mainframe modernization and migration projects , primarily focusing on migrating legacy mainframe systems to cloud-based solutions . This role requires a deep understanding of both mainframe technologies and know-how of Modern Cloud Architectures. The architect will be responsible for the technical design covering details of migration from mainframe to targeted modernized architecture. Architects shall be aware of modern architecture and shall be able to collaborate with Cloud/Modern architecture Architect ensuring smooth detailed migration plan can be carved out listing key risks along with their mitigations.
B) Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership and direction for mainframe migration projects. This includes defining the overall architecture, technology stack, and migration approach. Assessment and Analysis : Architect shall know how to do analysis of the Discovery phase outcome along with deep dive analysis about inventory and technical feasibility along with following activities:Identifying application dependencies and complexities.
Understanding business requirements and mapping and articulating them to the NFRs to be delivered by new architecture.
Identifying appropriate design patterns that shall be considered for modernization of mainframe systems.Architecture Design: Understand the target cloud architecture, ensuring it meets the client's requirements for performance, scalability, and security. This includes: Understanding application, integration, data, and infrastructure architecture.
Understanding of API'S / Services in Context of functional requirements.
Technology Selection: Participate in Cloud platforms selection based on project requirements.
Suggesting right tools for code transformation from legacy language to modern languages like Java.
Migration Strategy: Develop comprehensive migration plans for moving mainframe applications and data to cloud platforms like AWS or GCP or Private/Hybrid cloud, focusing on a phased approach. This will include identifying which components need to be rearchitected, rewritten, virtualized, or API-fied.
Required Skills and Experience:
Extensive experience spanning 15+ years with mainframe technologies, including COBOL, DB2, CICS, JCL, and Assembler.
Experience in understanding the discovery phase outcomes produced by any of the industry leading tools like AWS BlueAge, Micro Focus Discovery tool ete.Proven experience in designing and implementing mainframe migration projects.
Expertise in application re-architecture and modernization techniques.
Strong understanding of data migration and transformation strategies.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to lead and mentor technical teams.
Experience with migration tools such as AWS BluAge, GenAI and related
Experience in working in an Agile environment
D) Project Management or Soft skills:
Collaboration: Collaborate with Business Analysts, PMO, developers, quality engineers, and DevOps teams.
Documentation: Ensure proper documentation of all aspects of the migration including architectures, process and knowledge transfer.
Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks associated with mainframe migration projects.
Alliance Collaboration: Work closely with partners like AWS and IBM to leverage their technologies and expertise.
Good to have skills: Experience working with any of the Cloud Platforms for e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure. Experience in creating or working on modern architectures involving micro-services design pattern, containerized environments. Know-how of CI/CD devops.
F) Preferred Qualifications:
Any Engineering or equivalent degree.
Shall have development experience in Mainframe for at least10-15 years.
Should have worked on mainframe production environments too.
Should have worked on migrating or working with Modern architectures at least 2-3 years.
Experience in working with clients in regulated industries.
