JOB SUMMARY
The Battery Cell Design Validation Test Engineer will be responsible for validating the design and performance of Li-ion battery cells through rigorous testing in the product development phase. This role ensures that battery cells meet the required specifications, performance standards, and reliability goals by conducting design validation tests and providing valuable feedback to the product development team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design Validation Testing: Perform a range of tests to validate the performance, capacity, cycle life, and thermal behaviour of Li-ion battery cells, ensuring that designs meet or exceed performance specifications.
- Test Protocol Development: Develop and execute comprehensive test plans, including charge/discharge cycling, thermal cycling, impedance, and other performance validation tests, ensuring alignment with industry standards and product requirements.
- Test Setup & Execution: Set up test rigs, configure testing systems, and perform tests in a controlled environment, monitoring key parameters such as voltage, temperature, and current.
- Data Analysis & Reporting: Analyse test results to assess battery performance, identify deviations from design goals, and provide actionable insights to improve design and performance.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with R&D, engineering, and product development teams to provide testing insights and feedback, ensuring that designs are validated for production readiness.
- Documentation & Compliance: Maintain detailed test records, prepare test reports, and ensure that all design validation testing is conducted in compliance with industry standards (e.g., UL, IEC, and UN38.3).
- Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process or design improvements based on test results and collaborate with design and engineering teams to enhance battery cell performance and reliability
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential:
- Battery Testing Expertise: Strong understanding of Li-ion battery testing methods, including charge/discharge cycling, thermal cycling, impedance spectroscopy, and other validation tests.
- Data Analysis & Interpretation: Proficiency in analysing test data to evaluate battery cell performance, identify trends, and suggest improvements based on test results.
- Test Equipment Proficiency: Hands-on experience with battery testing equipment, such as cyclers, thermal chambers, impedance analysers, and data acquisition systems.
- Problem Solving: Strong ability to troubleshoot issues related to battery performance during validation and propose solutions to resolve design-related challenges.
- Attention to Detail: Excellent focus on accurate test execution, data recording, and analysis to ensure the integrity and reliability of validation results.
Desired:
- Collaboration & Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams and provide clear insights from testing.
- Documentation & Reporting: Ability to generate clear, concise test reports and technical documentation for validation activities and findings.
Role Specific Qualifications/Certifications
- This role is ideal for an engineer with experience in battery design validation and performance testing, looking to play a key role in ensuring the successful development of high-performance Li-ion batteries for commercial applications.
- This role is well-suited to an engineer with a degree or PhD in electrical, mechanical, systems or manufacturing engineering, with a focus on Li-ion battery technology and performance validation.
