Your New Role:


As a Senior VMWare Systems Engineer, you will be an expert in architecting, designing, installing, configuring, and maintaining our company's vmware virtualized computing platforms to ensure maximum performance, security, and reliability. Our technical footprint includes deployments on-premises as well as in the cloud; We are responsible for supporting a large range of business stakeholders and workloads from general computing to resource intensive development applications. The senior vmware systems engineer will bring a high-level of expertise in managing and optimizing our complex VMware vSphere ESXi environments including ESXi hosts, vcenter, and virtual machines. A thorough understanding of server hardware and OS architecture, advanced networking and advanced storage solutions is necessary in this role. You will leverage in-depth knowledge of VMware technologies to monitor system health, perform routine patching, and architect/execute disaster recovery and high availability strategies. You will be responsible for all areas of the system development lifecycle including management, planning, provisioning, triage, monitoring, and decommissioning of virtual machines and associated hardware technologies. You will document solutions ensuring best practices are followed and update stakeholders related to system changes. You will partner with peers and management staff on capacity planning analysis and monitoring methodologies. This position involves support of compute technologies and end-users across various Warner Bros. Discovery locations across the globe.

Your Role Accountabilities:

Engineering/Primary Responsibilities

  • Architect, build, maintain, and support VMware vSphere virtualized delivery platforms based on technical requirements provided by application, and business stakeholders.
  • Provision and configure various virtual machine images and server hardware that support virtualization technologies.
  • Responsible for administering scalable VMs in both a private and public cloud environment.
  • Install, configure, upgrade, and manage VMware vSphere environments including ESXi hosts, vCenters, and VMware analytics software.
  • Provide Tier 3 (complex) level support for virtual machines and related technologies including root cause analysis and preventative solution implementation.
  • Regularly assess system performance, recommend improvements, and perform tuning and resource optimization as required.
  • Assist with critical patching and vulnerability remediations.
  • Develop, document, and maintain installation and configuration procedures. Maintain knowledge of industry best practices and latest technology trends.
  • Leverage VMware APIs for automation and integration with other systems and toolsets.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned and in a timely fashion.

Operations

  • Troubleshoot issues with VMware hypervisor, guest OS images, and associated server hardware for rapid response to the business units; accepts ownership and seeks timely resolution.
  • Collaborates with developers and other stakeholders to ensure software is performing correctly and efficiently utilizing best practices.
  • Automate systems administration tasks utilizing open-source configuration management tools.
  • Ensure the highest levels of up-time; Respond to system alerts quickly ensuring that all aspects of our systems infrastructure are at production levels.
  • Implement and use monitoring tools, patch management tools, and VMware management tools.
  • Must be willing to accommodate weekend, shift, or on-call schedules when necessary.

Analytics

  • Develop comprehensive performance analysis of business processes and review ways of improvement.
  • Actively participate in stakeholder meetings with the goal of understanding all major projects and initiatives planned.
  • Periodically review our VMware environments for VM 'rightsizing' to prevent resource-constrained or resource-slack machines.
  • Develop disaster recovery or business continuity plans

Qualifications & Experiences:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience) is required.
  • Candidate must possess 5-8 years of experience in either a Systems Administration or Engineering role.
  • Strong knowledge of VMware vSphere ESXi, vCenter, and VRA setup, deployment, and maintenance
  • Familiarity with Linux and Windows server operating systems (RHEL, CentOS, Windows Server 2019/2022)
  • Candidates should have a passion for scripting/coding automation tools and technologies that improve system infrastructure and provisioning. (Powershell, Python, Ansible, Jenkins)
  • Proven experience with server hardware, various operating systems, advanced networking, and storage providing high performance and robust application platforms.
  • Knowledge and/or ability to comply with change management processes.
  • The candidate must have excellent communications skills to be successful.
  • Ability to organize information and produce technical documentation for operational effectiveness.
  • Flexible and adaptable; able to work in ambiguous situations.
  • Position requires after hours support for outages/impairments. Candidates will participate in a 24x7 on call support rotation.

Not Required but preferred experience:

  • Preferred experience in Amazon AWS or Azure Cloud environments.
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP)
  • Experience with enterprise computing in a media broadcast environment.
  • Experience with active directory and/or single sign-on methodologies.
  • Experience with VMWare Aria Automation a plus.
  • Experience with scripting (powershell, bash, python) are a plus
  • Experience with Ansible, Jenkins for automation tasks are a plus.
  • Experience with Service-Now integrations a plus.
