JOB DESCRIPTION

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Supporting alcohol control among Member States.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the overall supervision and guidance of Coordinator, Department of Healthier Populations and Noncommunicable Diseases (HPN) and the direct supervision of Regional Advisor- MHS, the incumbent is expected to:

  1. Analyze the epidemiological aspects of alcohol use in SEAR Member States preparation of report that include age and sex disaggregated data on prevalence of use and trends, per-capital consumption and alcohol related harm.
  2. Support preparing alcohol country context reports for 11 Member States.
  3. Support to collecting data on alcohol taxation in Member States.
  4. Support data collection for updating the SEAR publication "Alcohol Policy in the WHO South-East Asia Region: A Report", in 2018.
  5. Document successful community level alcohol control interventions in countries of the Region.
  6. Support implementation of SAFER project in Nepal.
  7. Any other technical work on mental health and substance abuse required by the MHS Unit.
  8. Undertake any other activities as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education

Essential: A first university degree from a recognized university in Health (medicine or public health) with a specialization on Psychiatry, Psychology or related subjects.

Desirable: Postgraduate degree in Medicine/Public Health/Mental Health.

Experience

Essential: Minimum of two years of experience in the field of mental health and proven relevant work experience in a multi-cultural environment.

Desirable: Fieldlevel experience, working with UN or other multilateral/international agencies

Skills

Knowledge of principles, practices, methods and technologies in public health management, especially in areas of his/her responsibility. Ability to have close collaboration with nationals and staff members.Excellent drafting skills to produce reports, policies, documents on subject matter(s) and deliver verbal presentations. Extensive knowledge on public health alcohol policies and alcohol control.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 50,377 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 1633 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
