SAP ABAP + Solution Manager (SolMan)

Role Overview

An SAP ABAP + SolMan professional combines core ABAP development skills with hands-on expertise in SAP Solution Manager (SolMan), SAP's application lifecycle management (ALM) platform. The role ensures end-to-end governance of SAP changes, operations, and quality by developing robust ABAP solutions and leveraging SolMan capabilities such as Change Request Management (ChaRM), Solution Documentation, Monitoring, Test Suite, and Focused Build. The goal is to deliver stable, compliant, and well-documented SAP changes across the landscape while improving operational visibility and performance.

Key Responsibilities

• ABAP Development
• Design, build, test, and optimize ABAP objects (reports, enhancements, user exits/BADIs, interfaces, forms, CDS views for ABAP RESTful scenarios).
• Ensure performance tuning, code quality, security, and adherence to naming and transport standards.
• Troubleshoot production issues and perform root-cause analysis across custom code and standard integration points.
• Change and Release Management (with SolMan)
• Configure and operate ChaRM: request for change (RfC), normal/urgent changes, retrofit, and release cycles.
• Govern transport management across DEV/QAS/PRD, ensuring auditability, approvals, and segregation of duties.
• Coordinate releases and cutovers; ensure landscape synchronization and retrofit for dual-track scenarios.
• Solution Documentation and Testing
• Maintain Solution Documentation (process hierarchy, executables, test objects) aligned to business process design.
• Set up and run Test Suite (manual/automated), test plans, test packages, and defect management integrated with ChaRM.
• Traceability: link requirements, design, build, test, and deployment artifacts for compliance.
• Monitoring and Operations
• Configure and support Technical Monitoring (System, E2E), Job Monitoring, Interface/Connection Monitoring, and Business Process Monitoring.
• Set up alerting, dashboards, and KPIs; triage alerts with Basis/functional teams; drive problem management improvements.
• Support Root Cause Analysis (RCA), E2E diagnostics, and performance analysis for ABAP systems.
• Focused Build/Agile Delivery (optional but valued)
• Utilize SolMan Focused Build for requirement-to-deploy at scale: work packages/items, waves/sprints, and integrated testing/reporting.
• Align ABAP delivery with agile ceremonies and tooling, ensuring DevOps/CI-CD alignment where feasible.
• Compliance, Security, and Documentation
• Enforce coding standards, transport controls, and SoD within SolMan.
• Document technical specs, test evidence, deployment notes, and operations runbooks.
• Support audits with complete traceability and SolMan reporting.
• Required Skills
• ABAP
• Strong ABAP OO, performance tuning, Open SQL, enhancement framework, IDocs/BAPIs, ALE/Proxy integration, OData/SAP Gateway, forms (SmartForms/Adobe), and debugging.
• Experience analyzing dumps, locks, and performance traces (ST22, ST12, SAT, SQLM/DB04).
• Solution Manager
• Practical experience with SolMan 7.2 components: ChaRM, Solution Documentation, Test Suite, Technical Monitoring, Interface/Job Monitoring, and optionally Focused Build.
• Understanding of SolMan roles/authorizations concepts, work centers, and integration to managed systems.
• Hands-on with transport management integration (CTS/CTS+, Retrofit), and setup activities (e.g., SOLMAN_SETUP in partnership with Basis).
• Process and Governance
• ITIL-aligned change, release, and incident/problem management.
• Ability to translate business processes into technical designs and maintain bidirectional traceability.
• Collaboration
• Work closely with SAP Basis, security, functional, and business teams; communicate clearly and drive cross-team execution.
