The Azure Data engineering team at Microsoft is at the forefront of transforming analytics in the data world. Within Azure Data, our big data analytics team offers a suite of products enabling data engineers and data scientists to extract insights from structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data. We are unifying our diverse products into Microsoft Fabric, creating streamlined experiences that simplify and accelerate value delivery.

The Spark team within Fabric is pushing the boundaries of analytics engines. We're inviting you to help revolutionize how data is processed. We develop services that empower big data developers to create mission-critical applications with high SLAs. We're hiring a Principal Software Engineer to work on and extend both Open Source Software (OSS) technologies like Spark, Delta, Velox, and Gluten , as well as proprietary Microsoft services. Your role will involve designing and implementing software components, participating in code and design reviews, assisting customers in leveraging the service, and maintaining high performance, integration, security, and reliability.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, Scala, or Python

o OR equivalent experience.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, Scala, or Python

o OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, Scala, or Python

o OR equivalent experience.

Proficiency in distributed systems or client-server architecture

Familiarity with OSS components, particularly the Apache Spark ecosystem

Approach problem-solving with a deep passion for and empathy towards customers

Knowledge of database internals

Debugging and profiling skills on Java/C++ applications

Experience in developing scalable cloud services

Enthusiasm for tackling challenging technical problems

Strong curiosity and a willingness to question assumptions

Responsibilities

Work with a team of passionate engineers to deliver success for customers Design, implement, test, and operate data services. Release features on time, with high quality, meeting functional, performance, scalability, and compliance requirements. Drive quality right from the design phase, incorporating best practices and engineering for testability.
