We are seeking an accomplished professional with a robust academic background and significant domain experience.

  • In this role, you will analyze and interpret complex tax laws and guidelines, understand changes, and be able to summarize and/or expand the information reported upon request. As a Tax Researcher, you will be responsible for sourcing, investigating, and analyzing US State and locally administered tax rules, rates, forms, and metadata changes promptly to integrate those laws into Avalara products. This position offers a unique opportunity to join a highly productive indirect tax research team within a rapidly growing Software as a Service (SaaS) company.
Job Duties

Ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of tax information demands extensive research efforts. Given the dynamic nature of indirect tax laws and rate trends, a commitment to continuous learning and staying updated on developments is necessary to remain effective in this role

  • Researching U.S. taxes, thorough research on federal and state taxes and regulations, ensuring compliance.
  • Responsible for ensuring content accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of content, particularly for Sales and Use tax and Lodging Taxes.
  • Precision in interpreting tax laws and regulations to meet legal and regulatory standards.
  • Understand and navigate Tax Authority portals effectively.
  • Suggest and lead improvements in our software solutions.
  • Collaborate with tax content research, product management, and engineering teams to implement effective solutions.
  • Thoroughly documenting research findings with clarity and detail, providing comprehensive summaries and expansions upon request.
  • Communicating and coordinating effectively with team members to achieve achieve objectives in a timely manner.
  • Be open to accepting additional responsibilities and occasionally overlapping work schedules with US/UK timing for collaborative meetings or training.
  • Identify opportunities for process automation, streamlining, and reducing redundancy to enhance efficiency.
  • Lead automation and tax technology projects from inception to completion, including project planning, stakeholder management, resource allocation, and risk mitigation.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedure
What You'll Need to be Successful

  • 3+ years of experience in indirect tax compliance function and/or familiarity with indirect tax returns and instructions with a Master's degree or with a Bachelor's degree.
  • Masters in Finance, Masters in Business Administration, Degree in Law, Bachelor of Commerce, or any related field.
  • Relevant advanced degree or certification (i.e. Accounting, Finance, Law, Economics)
  • Indirect tax / digital reporting research experience, including a logical and creative approach to drilling down to specific data that is vital to the accuracy of the published content.
  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written)
- conveying complex e-invoicing concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Analytical skills & legal research experience for reviewing research, interpreting complex tax regulations, and developing effective tax technology solutions.
  • Proficiency in MS office tools, browsers & & subscription research services.
  • Experience in working with indirect tax technology solutions/ tax software implementations/ tax process improvement projects.
