Job Description:

Three master theses in the collaborative project

To tackle the sustainability crisis, there is a worldwide need for concrete industrial solutions. Many of these require research and development work. Industrial size solutions are in the core of transition towards sustainability.


The purpose of this thesis project is to find out what role industrial CO2 capture plays in the transition to sustainability.

What are the effects and impacts, especially from the point of view of carbon accounting, society, economy, climate and nature? In addition, what is the role of EU regulation in the development of CO2 capturing and utilization technologies and business?


This project will be done in close collaboration by Metsä Group (Maija Pohjakallio), St1 (Riitta Silvennoinen) and AFRY (Nani Pajunen).

In the project, there is a common context which includes three specific perspectives. Each of the perspectives (Case Metsä, Case St1 and Case AFRY) will be one master thesis.

The students will work together in close collaboration for the common context and at the same time with their own thesis.

The work will be started in a joint workshop organized by the supervisors and invited experts.

The diploma workers will hold regular meetings with each other, and joint sparring meetings will be organized on a regular basis.


Qualifications:

Common tasks:

  • The different carbon pools in nature, atmosphere and technosphere and classification of carbon according to its origin (biogenic carbon, mineral carbon, fossil carbon)
  • Summary of the key EU policy files related to CO2 capture and utilization, including possible conflicts in regulation
  • How to develop synergies between different sectors and value chains to maximize sustainability benefits?
Case AFRY (Supervisor Nani Pajunen): Value of industrial CO2 in the different kind of value nets

Individual tasks:

  • What is the economy perspective to carbon cycle?
  • How does regulation, economy and nature perspectives appear to the organizations in the different phases of value nets? Consider all sides of an issue.
  • What are the drivers and barriers to utilize industrial CO2, especially from economy perspective?
  • What are the challenges and opportunities of the collaboration in ecosystems/network?
  • What are the business opportunities in national and international levels in the CO2 capturing and utilization technologies?
