Position Overview

Being a Freelance Food Safety Auditor means carrying out audits of food production, processing, and handling facilities independently to ensure they comply with food safety standards and regulations. This role demands flexibility, expertise in food safety, and the ability to work autonomously. Freelance Food Safety Auditors play a vital role in upholding the safety and quality of food products for various clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting Independent Audits:
    • Undertake scheduled and unscheduled audits at different food production and processing facilities.
    • Evaluate compliance with food safety standards like HACCP, ISO 22000, BRC, SQF, and relevant local regulations.
  • Evaluating Food Safety Systems:
    • Assess food safety management systems, including documentation, procedures, and records.
    • Confirm the implementation and effectiveness of critical control points (CCPs) and preventive controls.
  • Identifying and Reporting Non-Conformities:
    • Spot areas of non-compliance and potential food safety risks.
    • Record findings in detailed audit reports, pointing out any deviations from standards and providing a risk assessment.
  • Providing Recommendations:
    • Give actionable recommendations to address identified non-conformities and improve food safety practices.
    • Work with facility management to create corrective action plans and oversee their implementation.
  • Staying Updated:
    • Stay informed about current food safety regulations, standards, and industry best practices.
    • Engage in continuous professional development and training to stay knowledgeable in the field.

Client Communication:

  • Effectively conveying audit results and recommendations to clients.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive audit reports tailored to client needs and regulatory requirements.

Training and Support:

  • Educate and train facility staff on food safety standards, best practices, and regulatory requirements as necessary.
  • Create and deliver training programs and materials to assist client compliance efforts.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Contribute to enhancing food safety auditing processes and tools.
  • Provide feedback to auditing bodies and engage in internal reviews and quality assurance programs.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Hold a Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, or a related field.
    • Obtain professional certifications like Certified Food Safety Auditor (CFSA), Certified HACCP Auditor (CHA), or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in food safety auditing, quality assurance, or food manufacturing.
  • Demonstrate expertise in food safety standards and regulatory requirements.

Skills:

  • Possess in-depth knowledge of food safety principles, HACCP, GMP, and relevant standards such as ISO 22000, BRC, SQF.
  • Exhibit strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Show excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Display effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Capable of writing clear and concise audit reports.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite and auditing software.

Other Requirements:

  • Be willing to travel to various audit locations, sometimes at short notice.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently and manage time efficiently.
  • Uphold strong ethical standards and professional integrity.
  • Adapt easily to different client demands and regulatory environments.

Work Environment:

  • Visit various food production environments, which may involve exposure to cold, heat, noise, and odors.
  • Wear protective clothing and follow strict hygiene practices while on-site.
  • Freelance auditors should be self-motivated and capable of handling their schedules and workload.
