As a
Lead Java Engineer
at Tide, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and managing the rich product portfolio in one of our Business domains such as Payments Service, Business Service. We have an extensive roadmap ahead with plenty of interesting challenges to solve.
To give you a clearer picture, you may oversee vital payments technology like our Core Banking infrastructure to handle our ledger, accounts, and cards. This includes fostering successful collaborations with multiple banking partners for our global expansion into new markets, along with working on advanced features like SEPA payments, Open Access/Open Banking, our in-house BNPL for SMEs, Accounting automation, and more.
This role presents a unique opportunity to have a significant impact by leading engineering practices in a fast-growing company. We empower our engineers to make crucial technical decisions that influence multiple teams and drive the future of Tide's Global One Platform.
We operate in small autonomous teams, organized under common domains, overseeing the full lifecycle of specific microservices in Tide's service portfolio.
Our engineers self-organize, collaborate to address technical hurdles, and establish their own standards within different Communities of Practice, regardless of their position in our Growth Framework.
Responsibilities as a Lead Java Engineer:
- Defining, owning, and maintaining the services within your team's domain from our service catalogue (you design it, you build it, you run it, you scale it globally)
- Collaborating with the product team to choose technology partners
- Working closely with backend engineers from various agile teams, balancing your time between design/refinement, implementation, and mentoring teammates
- Consistently aligning your team's vision and roadmap with the target architecture in your domain to ensure the success of complex multi-domain initiatives
- Engaging with product owners, mobile & web engineers, data scientists, and other team members to convert requirements into well-engineered solutions
- Making significant contributions to our Community of Practice
You will leverage your extensive experience in our domain and existing guidelines to set a strong example of best practices among fellow engineers.
Requirements for a Great Fit:
- Experience in building server-side applications and a deep understanding of the relevant programming languages for your stack. While Java knowledge is not mandatory, it's essential to note that we have 200+ microservices written in Java, so a willingness to learn it is crucial when modifications are required.
- Sound knowledge of a backend framework (e.g., Spring/Spring Boot) used to develop microservices that expose and consume RESTful APIs (important in the realm of Open Banking where APIs are frequently public)
- Proficiency in engineering scalable and reliable solutions in a cloud-native environment. Understanding the fundamentals of CI/CD and practical Agile approaches is paramount.
- Demonstrate a commitment to delivering secure, well-tested, and well-documented software that integrates with various third-party providers and partners—a common practice in the fintech industry.
