Soil Scientist

Soil scientist is responsible to analyse the characteristics of soil, different soil types, and researching the ability to survive in differentiated conditions.

He is also responsible for the study of soil structure, properties, chemical composition, and the different stages of transformations that soil goes through.

He will assist with planning and surveying for land development purposes, assess the effect of agrochemicals used in farming, aid land restoration, and reclamation projects, gauge drainage, and irrigation requirements; or investigate environmental, climatic, and pollution issues.

• Research or study soil characteristics, map soil types, and investigate responses of soils to known management practices to determine the use capabilities of soils and the effects of alternative practices on soil productivity.
• Provide advice on rural or urban land use.
• Perform chemical analysis on the micro-organism content of the soil to determine microbial reactions and chemical mineralogical relationship to plant growth.
• Investigate responses of specific soil types to soil management practices, such as fertilization, crop rotation, and industrial waste control.
• Conducts experiments on farms or experimental stations to determine the best soil types for different plants.
• Initiate and implement research & development programs for soil research.
• Prepare documented proposals and successfully establish research trials.
• Meet the company requirements for trial planning and operation of research projects.
• Manage trial establishment and collection of data.
• Preparation of Budget for research work and provide management reporting in regard to trial/research progress.
• Keeping self-up to date with developments in soil science and relevant legislation or environmental issues
• Carry out fieldwork, including the collection of soil samples from a range of environments.
• Write research reports and make presentations on findings, including scientific research papers and non-scientific client reports
