The Banyan is a registered charitable trust established in 1993, committed to providing comprehensive mental health solutions for homeless individuals and those living in poverty with severe mental disorders.


We offer the following services:
- hospital-based services, through Emergency Care & Recovery Centres (ECRC) which offer multidisciplinary, person-centred, hospital-based care for homeless people with mental health issues to recover and re-enter stable housing and community living arrangements.
- inclusive living options, through Home Again (HA) supporting inclusive living options and mental health-friendly communities for homeless persons living with mental illnesses who cannot return to their homes.

  • And NALAM, a community mental health program that offers holistic care starting from primary levels, led by grassroots workers who combine social care with mental health care and is supported by proximal community health clinics.
In Maharashtra, we are implementing the Home Again programme in Ratnagiri and NALAM in Aaghai, Thane District.


Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health (BALM) is a pioneering organization dedicated to bridging gaps in mental health treatment and care through research, social action, and education initiatives.

We work at the intersection of homelessness and mental illness, providing support to Banyan programs.

We work in partnership with civil society organizations, user-caregiver groups, government entities, and academic institutions. These partnerships are operational across 10 states in India and 2 neighbouring countries - Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Roles and Responsibilities

Assessment and Diagnosis:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments using standardized tools and diagnostic criteria to evaluate individuals' mental health needs in the community
  • Analyze assessment results to identify mental health disorders and formulate accurate diagnoses.
  • Utilize clinical judgment and expertise to interpret assessment findings and develop Individual care plans.

Treatment Planning and Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of mental health professionals to develop individualized care plans for clients.
  • Participate in case conferences and treatment meetings to review progress and adjust treatment strategies as needed.
  • Coordinate with psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, and other professionals to ensure holistic care and support for clients.

Psychotherapy and Counseling:

  • Provide individual, group, and family psychotherapy sessions to address a diverse range of mental health concerns.
  • Offer counseling services to help individuals cope with stress, trauma, grief, relationship issues, and emotional difficulties.
  • Incorporate evidencebased therapeutic techniques and interventions to facilitate healing and growth.

Crisis Intervention and Trauma Care:

  • Respond promptly to mental health crises within the community, offering immediate support and interventions for individuals in acute distress.
  • Deliver traumainformed care to individuals who have experienced traumatic events, integrating traumafocused approaches into assessment and treatment.
  • Provide crisis stabilization and emotional support to clients in crisis situations, ensuring their safety and wellbeing.

Rehabilitation and Recovery Support:

  • Facilitate rehabilitation programs aimed at enhancing psychosocial skills and promoting independence for clients with mental health challenges.
  • Support individuals in their recovery journey, offering encouragement, guidance, and resources to help them achieve their goals.
  • Implement strategies for relapse prevention and longterm wellbeing, empowering clients to maintain their mental health and resilience.

Education and Training:

  • Offer training sessions and workshops to community mental healthcare workers, individuals at risk, those with mental illness, caregivers, and the general population.
  • Provide education on mental health awareness, coping strategies, stress management techniques, and accessing mental health resources.
  • Foster knowledge and skills development to enhance mental health literacy and promote early intervention and support.

Professional Development and Ethics:

  • Engage in ongoing professional development activities, including continuing education, supervision, and participation in conferences and workshops.
  • Adhere to ethical guidelines and standards of practice in psychology, maintaining confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Stay informed about current research, best practices, and emerging trends in the field of mental health to provide highquality, evidencebased care
