About A4I Lab: 

AI Innovation and Inclusion Initiative (A4I) is a partnership hub between Microsoft and the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIIT-B), collaborating with several non-profit domain partners. A4I's mission is to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence to solve real-world challenges in areas such as education, healthcare, accessibility, and agriculture. A4I will take up innovations developed and piloted by Microsoft to evolve and scale them in open source as DPGs (Digital Public Goods) deployable at a large scale. The broader goal is also to help foster a strong AI innovation ecosystem for effective social impact through the latest advances in AI technology. 

Role Overview: 

In the ML Engineer role, we are seeking a passionate, impact oriented, and analytical individual to lead the development with strong software design & engineering skills. The role would entail innovation, end to end research, build and deploying under various service offerings under the A4I. Experience working on platform solutions, and onboarding, training, customization, deployment and/or scaling of LLMs, while partnering with data scientists & engineers from partners & model providers would be desirable. 

Key Responsibilities: 

• Design, develop, implement, test, and maintain scalable and efficient software solutions.  
• Large Language Model Expertise: Leverage extensive knowledge about large language models (LLMs) to create scalable, intelligent solutions for content understanding and user engagement on products in social impact space across a wide range of domain areas.  
• Experimentation and Analysis: Drive data-driven experimentation using A/B testing, advanced analytics, and statistical techniques to identify growth opportunities and refine algorithms.  
• Infrastructure Optimization: Develop and optimize pipelines, tools, and infrastructure.  
• Technical Leadership: Mentor team members and foster collaboration and high-performance culture within cross-functional teams, including engineers, product managers, researchers and designers.  
• Continuous Innovation: Stay informed on emerging trends in AI and machine learning and integrate them to drive innovation and improve product offerings.  
• Define project scopes, objectives, and timelines, and ensure successful execution of engineering projects from conception to deployment.

Required Qualifications: 

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, AI/ML, Data Science, or a related field. 
• 7-8 years of hands-on experience technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, Golang , C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python. 
• Proficiency and experience in embedding models, query models including but not limited to n8n, Potpie, Langraph, LlamaIndex and similar frameworks. 
• Familiarity with LLMs (e.g., OpenAI, Ollama, Mistral, Gemini) and RAG-based architectures. 
• Demonstrated success in working with large datasets and cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.  
• Experience in leveraging multi modal, multi-channel inputs with familiarity in data modelling, database management and data storage in vector stores, file containers, graph databases and relational structures. 
• Familiarity with Model Deployment and MLOps 
• Deployment tools and frameworks and packaging models as Docker containers 
• MLOps practices including ML lifecycle orchestration  
• Good communication and problem-solving skills with a collaborative mindset. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Advanced degree (PhD/MS) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, or a related field; or equivalent experience.  
• Experience using large language models (LLMs), Vision Language Models (VLMs) for machine learning and AI applications.  
• Experience training, fine-tuning, evaluating Small Language Models (SLMs) for specific scenarios like multilingual improvement. 
• Hands-on experience in growth engineering, driving improvements in user satisfaction.  
• Expertise in personalization strategies and user behavior modeling.  
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to independently design solutions to complex challenges.  
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence technical and non-technical audiences.  
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities and projects at a time, and adapt to changing requirements and deadlines.
